Default What route to go

I'm looking at a budget around 15k to spend on a motor for my 67 el camino. I have an iron block lq4 but if there is an easier/better route id rather just do that. Just looking to get a high hp motor that will mostly be street/show. What would be a good direction to go if that's my budget?

Way wrong section but....Use your LQ4 for a nice 408 budget stroker. I think you would be nuts to go buy a pricey motor from GM w/ what you have.

I forgot to mention that I do have 2 turbos that are laying around also. Just didn't know if for the money I have that I could do something better than build the lq4. I don't want to spend 15k on a 500 hp crate motor. For that money there's gotta be something better than that Lol

15k can get you a whole LOT of power if you're smart with it. The problem with that much money is.. people usually aren't smart with it and start buying things they don't need or could get an equivalent for much cheaper.

If you can weld, you can fabricate a pretty nice twin turbo hotside for no more than $500 plus the cost of manifolds.

There is nothing wrong with the LQ4. A stock cube forged rotating assembly would be capable of a ton of power.

You need to decide what you actually want first. stroker or stock crank? EFI or carb? single or twins?

And then stick to your plan with one builder, don't ask around and mix parts.
A built LQ4 with a s480 or twin 62s will easily make 7-800hp if done correctly

stock stroke, efi, twins. That's what I've been looking into doing. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't dumping thousands into this lq4 and there's a better bang for my money. I'd hate to drop 15k into an lq4 and there be options for cheaper with better power.

I have an uncle who is a great welder that will help me weld up the hot side. So that should help a lot with that

Stock block, stock crank LQ4 with forged rods and pistons have been pushed to 1200+ HP before. Bang for the buck, you're not getting much better. Anything larger displacement is aluminum and more expensive. Rectangle port heads can be found cheap, and don't require any porting. You'll need good headgaskets and studs depending on how much power you want to run.

I was looking at the ls7 in the classified for $7500 that's what got me thinking there could be better for the money. But if lq4 is a solid block to go with then I'll continue to do my research on it so I can get the right setup. Thank you everyone

you need a WHP number goal before you buy anything.

What's a good goal? What could be achievable with my budget or less if I could tighten the budget some I wouldn't mind lol

15K can buy you A LOT of power especially if you have two turbos sitting in your garage.. pick a REALISTIC number. Are you one of those guys that is never satisfied with the HP goals? or do you generally pick a goal and stick with it? are you bulding a dyno queen or a race car? All important details.

IMO if you are happy with 800-1000WHP take that LQ4 and punch it out to 370ci and enjoy it. You can have a nice forged turbo long block capable of these numbers and not have to worry about reliability around $7k or less.

I honestly will probably put it on a dyno a handful of times at the most. I just want a fairly high hp motor. My father passed away and his plan was to do something with high hp just to say it's done. I want to do basically that exact same. its basically just going to be drove around town and more of show. I'll be happy with 800-1000 hp. 800 would be just fine honestly. If I pick a goal I'm definitely sticking to it

Lots of other options but for what you're trying to do that is a SOLID receipt for a good track motor.. much less a dyno queen and something to play around on the streets with.. You can have the whole thing said and done (injectors, complete motor, wiring harness, nuts bolts, TB, intake yada yada for well under 15k..

15 grand with some research and fab/assembly skills could get you 1500-2000 hp.

600 HP is within the limits of a stock LS engine. You could hit that goal for a third of that.

Well that's all good news then. I wanted something strong and reliable so I'll just do forged bottom end for sure. What rod and piston combo do you guys recommend?
