Default Does your car run hot?

temperature wise does your car ever get hotter than lets say around the 210 mark?I know that a lot of the guages in ls1's are hot but am curious if when adding a blower or turbo setup your motor would get close to overheating. I am currently having a heating problem which i believe is due to a coolant leak. Others have told me otherwise, that any turbo or blower car will need an aftermarket radiator. So guru's what do you use to keep the motor cool or shall I say at a reasonable temperature? Did any of you guys have the uprgrade the radiator etc...

Thanks

stock 1999+ gauges read 210 in normal operating range.

only the 1998 gauges actually work.

Provided you don't go with the ATI blower and ATI's crappy fan , you should not have any cooling issues adding FI to a good ls1 setup

Thanks guys I wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one who thought cars should not be overheating when setup right. My car in question has a turbotech t60 kit on it.

My 98 gauge works and is pretty close. I stay around 190-200 with the single ATi fan here in Texas heat. i still have the stock thermostat but i am programmed PCM wise for a 160.
I had overheating issues when we first installed my kit.... ATI had the colors of the fan wires backwards and the fan was pushing instead up sucking....

ok i got the turbotech T76 kit and i noticed it runs a little hotter now, probably due to the IC blocking the radiator. i plan on moving it away soon and put on a bigger IC.

When I recieved my HPTuner the other day, first thing I went for was the fans. my stock settings were.

Fan on off
1 226 195
2 230 210

Whats up with that? I lowered it to 170/165 and 180/168. Car with the stock thermo out in Vegas has been running around 195 (and the air temps have been well into the 100s here). 160 is soon to go in

The 2002 gauges are calibrated kind of funny compared to say a 98 (I am not sure what year they chaged the gauge cal). The 98 works like a standard gauge - it is close to linear in how it displays temperature. The 2002 (and maybe some earlier years) is way different though. When the needle is just touching the 210 on the cold side it is at about 160. If it is just touching the 210 on the hot side it is about 230. It only spikes up if it goes over 230 or so. To get an accurate temp read, you need a scan tool or a seperate gauge. I use a scanmaster in mine when I sit in traffic because I want to know when it is getting hot before the gauge spikes, because by then it is too late.

I don't know why they did it like that. I have heard that at some point they decided that all the gauges should be straight up as much as possible when in the "good" range.

in 1998 the gauge will fluxuate a lot, from the 1st mark (180 ish) to 210 in normal operation.

the 210, is really 226 when the fans will turn on, and drop the temps back down to about 195 or so.

people saw the gauge moving a lot in the 1998 cars, (due to GM's 226 fan turnon settings) and complained/thought it was overheating.

There is nothing wrong with getting up to 228 in a stock car. as thats how it was set by the factory. Just myself, and most others don't like the car going that high.

DarkblueTa, your high speed fans will always run with those settings. as the car will never cool under 180 with a stock 195 degree stat. It will however stay at/near 195 though.

I run the temps that hypertech says to run on this link http://www.hypertech.com/install_ins...p3/pp3pg5.html

Ryan,

Thanks for the site. I know that until I get the 160 in there that it will run at 195, but that's better out here then running 230 on the highway.

I will set my fans to their temps soon. Actually, as long as everything goes well, the 160 will go into the car on Thurs

Again, thanks for the site!

Matt
