My builder says we can get it nitrided though.

That defect is weird. It will catch my fingernail.

I trust my guy. We will get it figured out.

No copper on the bearing. I looked at them with a microscope cause I'm a nerd and have one. 😊 Pretty interesting.
I wonder what the Rockwell is on these.

If Nitrided that probably wouldn't happen.

How much to have it surface hardened?

Either way, a factory crank that handled 700-850 hp for two years! It doesn't really owe you anything. Lol. LS stuff is unreal.

Darn straight.

I am glad I am blessed to see the HP revolution that I knew would come when I first laid my eyes on an LS engine back in 96. Dollar for Dollar the best SBE HP handling motors available.

Viva La LS Revolution!

The one in my Nova is the first one I ever dealt with. More than once during disassembly I said "GM's got their **** together with these engines." Sorry Ron your car rocks!

I got the 3.8" custom turbo pistons he sells.

My engine guy is Larry Kalsch out in Hillsboro. Been my builder and friend for 35 years.

Totally agree guys. No complaints. I was just a bit surprised. Could have been my fault. First one I've had apart as well.

My guy tells me about $250 to nitride and polish. Plus shipping of course. Place he likes is in Denver. Says our local shop sucks! Ha!

How does the rod bearing look that came off that rod journal with the mark in it? I have never seen a crank crack like that. Seen plenty of BBC and SBC cranks crack from the oil passage out, but usually in a fairly straight line towards the radius.

I would just polish it and see what it looks like. You will want the extra oil clearance with fresh bearings anyway.

Scotch Bright the bearings and throw you're other "800hp crank" in there and rock on! Nothing wrong with the way any of those parts look.

The crank wore worse than the bearings......
On the Pistons I smoothed the scuffs with 1200 grit before reassembly.
I did scotchbrite the bearings lightly too.

It was what I'd call a carefull backyard build.

It never smoked. Never had more than a touch of blowby.

Doesn't really look bad whatsoever. And this is with the flash of a camera lighting everything up which usually makes everything look a little worse....
