Default Lq4 with cummins he351?

Hey guys I was really considering on using the VGT turbo off my cummins and using it as a single. Would this work and will I need to modify any of the turbo internals or just run it like that?

Not sure if it totally applies, but the guys from Roadkill on Motor Trend TV youtube channel built a car they called Rotsun. It was a 240Z with a 4.3 Chevy V-6. They used a turbo off of an F-350 diesel I believe. You may watch the episodes with that car's build to see if there is some information that may be of use. The car was beast in the straights when that turbo got spooling. I'm gonna have to watch it again just for fun.

There are several episodes, but this was the first build I believe.

Well the thing I wanna know is, can the motor spin the cummins vgt good since I've heard the internals are kinda heavy.

How are you going to control the veins in the turbo? Those are oil & water cooled right?

As far as water cooled I know you don't have to connect that but I mean every turbo needs oil flowing through it.

That is a tiny turbo for an lq4. The compressor side is like 60mm and the turbine is even smaller. Even being a vgt turbo it is way too small. Plus if you built your hotside around it it would be kind of a one off deal as the turbine housing is inbetween a t3 and t4. Just sell that thing and buy an s475 or a vs racing 78/75 or something of equivalent size.

that turbo is a 60 mm compressor and a 59 mm turbine. way small for an lq4as a single but two of them would work ok. As for control, I figured out a way to make it work with an on board air tank, actuator from an he551ve on a cm 870 isx, a turbo control valve from an cm 870 isx cummins and a megasquirt to tell the control valve what to do. lots of trial and error. maybe replace the actuator with a big wastegate actuator and the control valve with just a solenoid but I had this stuff laying around so I designed around that. I was going to put twin he451ve turbos on my Camaro rear mount but once it was figured out everything I was gonna need and all that I dumped the idea and went single front mount billet s480. it was just stupid how much crap I was going to have to do to make the vgt work on the car plus the vgt turbos are freaking heavy as hell. I think the 451 I have weighted in like 40 pounds a piece. if you want ill draw you up a diagram of how it would work but it really wasn't worth it once I was there. I know the 451 had a t4i flange which you can get on ebay im not sure on the 351 though.

I ran (and still have, planning to use on current build) a large T6 frame VGT Garrett turbo on a SBE 5.3 i did a few years ago. You simply just don't run a wastegate and you run the reference signal to the actuator for the vanes and it does the rest. For as large of a unit as it was, it actually spooled pretty quickly and regulated boost well. Only downfall was the added size and weight of the exhaust housing. Power spool was very smooth and power application was very linear.

I can't speak for this particular unit as far as size, but wanted to share my experience in using a VGT turbo
