Default Finally made some passes at N vs S

We pulled an all-nighter Friday nite working the car. So I was unable to attend SCC.

We were working on a number of aspects on the car Friday nite. Magnus and I (Keith from HP Tuners) basically:
-tweaked the tune some more
-aligned the stock rack
-went over FAST wiring
-installed truck coils (on a hot engine) because it had a 4000-5000 rpms miss, it would not pull thru that rpm under load
-Swapped on new 28x10.5x15 ET Drags on some other 15x10 Pro Stars, and had some problems with the wheel weights rubbing, and I had to re-clearance a spot in the passenger side fender well
-Washed the car, first time since Nov 2002.
-Installed some carpeting in the car
-Loaded up the car

At that point it was 2:45 AM so we all headed home. I slept about 20 minutes and when Keith called me at 5:08 am I was listening to music and trying to remember what I needed to grab from the garage.

Left Schiller Park and the Warehouse at 6:50 AM.

Got to US41, and to our surprise, one of the calipers will still rubbing. Mikey from Rapid lent us a file and we clearanced the driver's side caliper in one spot. I guess that Pro Stars might be off a little depending on when you get them.

Keith on the laptop, and my friend Josh driving the car, they go to a remote point in the parking lot to bring up the car on the 'brake and recheck the AF tune in the upper rpms.

Huge problem.

Oil feed line to the blower makes contact with the body and snaps off. Oil everywhere. That's why the car was smoking like crazy as they babied it back to our pit spot. It looked bad at first, I thought they had somehow lost a head gasket maybe due to a lean spot in the tune.

Turned out to be the oil feed fitting. Rare stuff. Can't get them from the hardware stuff. Racing was over.

A while later Intmd8 and 8seclt1 went thru 8seclt1's stuff (he has everything I am convinced of it) and not only did he have another fitting, but he had an Easy-out. Jim got the broken part of the fitting out of the blower, clearanced the body, and then put it together. kp and I cleaned the oil off the underside of the car.

I added 3 quarts to car.

We held our collective breath, and I started it. It was fine.

I rechecked the oil and let it run for a while to burn off the oil on the exhaust.

Keith and I went back to the remote corner of the pit area and I brought the car up on brake a few times and the fitting did not hit the body anymore.

Car was actually never redynoed after the FAST standalone was installed.

So our plan was to make some tune passes early in morning.

So we ended up doing the same thing only at 2pm.

I kept the shocks tight, we put timing at 20 degrees, and I rolled out and went:

10.83@130? 2.0 (I gave someone the slip)
-I let off in the top of 3rd I thought the car popped once
-timing at 20

I went again and this time brought it up to 2500 and floored it once I was a few cars out:
10.38@129 1.64 (lost the blower belt 300 ft below the end)
-timing was at 22

I put a new belt on, Keith added some more fuel, left timing alone:
10.33@135.9 1.58
-AF on pass was 10.5:1
-Looks like it made 15psi
-all passes on C16
-I ran it to 7000 in 1st, and 6800 in 2nd
-weighed it, and with me in it the scales said 3460
-my first ever attemp using a 'brake, I unfortunately rolled and cut the beams might have gone 9's had I not done that

I am pretty happy with the first numbers.

This morning we unloaded the car and took out some fuel out of the tune and I did two 'brake launches in front of the warehouse... Car spun for 300 ft. But the car is faster and still runs great.

I'm really looking for 9.9 and 140 mph next time out. I think 9.9's will be pretty easy, but the 140mph might take a while. I'm not sure how much timing I can run before it's too much. I had 22 before with the C12 tune and the 746rwhp numbers. I might be able to run 25 now with the C16.

Peak boost was 209kpa I believe.

Based on my friend's Vortech S Trim exploits from a few years ago, I know the car has to come out a lot harder and work a lot better in the first 200 ft to run 9's and to run big mph... Cuz I was barely making boost off the line on the tuning passes. My converter is going to 4200-4300 on the 'brake, and that might not be enough to run mid 9's, but we'll see.

'brake is a total blast I love it!!!!

I have not made fast runs since 2002 but by the last pass I wanted to go faster. Too bad I was clumsy with the 'brake on that last pass.

Thanks to all that helped especially Magnus, 8seclt1, Intmd8, kp, Danimal95, and Z8's.

I remember the first time I left with a trans brake - they are cool, do your self a favor though and tune the car to run the best you can without it, then use it.

Your car is heavy, I weighed mine there and it was 3430. I have weighed my car on several different scales and I would guess the one at 41 was 70-80lbs on the light side according to our scales. If its not I'm more then happy with my raceweight

You were lucky to have a couple guys there that were willing to get that fitting fixed - you should buy them a few beers...

Car sounded wicked and looked decent - but polish up them front wheels a little unless they are supposed to be green

You are saying the scales were reading low?

I hope to take those guys out to eat or something, Jim turned the whole situation around.

I did not use the 'brake for #1 or #2, the plan was just to test stuff. I also shifted the first pass at 6500.

On the 2nd pass I lost the blower belt.. interesting experience. Car nosed over and then well it lost like 350hp, it was quite amusing.

I weighed my car on our 'good' scales friday at the shop, it was 3520 with me in it. Only difference was I took the muffler/tailpipes off the car which is 29lbs and put one more gallon of gas in at the station by my house. Ask one of the other guys who weighed, maybe its just our scales but they were recently calibrated.

I would not be suprised if my car was 3500 with me in it, but I'd like to get 3300 raceweight.

Awesome.. The car is showing alot of potential. If your like me.. every little thing that goes wrong with it nearly gives you a heart attack. Like the first time I fire something up after getting something major installed.. every tap or tick sounds like a bearing or rod.. Hehe.. Glad to see all your problems are minor bugs.

Good Luck,
Josh

ya i was so shocked that you actually ran it, i thought it was going to be the dyno queen forever.

oh by the way Puggs has the rest of your blower blelt, i was goign to keep it as a souvineer but he wouldnt let me have it.

We determined that the scales were probably 30-40lbs light by what most people were saying. I weighed my self and it was very close and my bike, seemed about right 395lbs with about 2 gallons of gas (with out fluids its 365) but as the weight increase i think the accuracy decreases.

The scales did seem a little light, I went over at 5450# and I know the truck weighs about that without me in it.
Great job John, you had the biggest "tag team" pit crew I have ever seen!!

Great shakedown runs PSJ Congrats!!

I think you have mid 9's in the setup easily with more tuning/seat time.

Also you might be surprised how much timing you can run with C16

That's not bad for it's first few passes. Your 1/8th mph is a bit low for all that power so it must be soft on the bottom right now. I'm sure with more seat time and a better tune 9's will be no problem at all.

I think he was rolling out and then hitting it. No full transbrake passes yet or even a hard footbrake launch

John, seems like you are finally getting your act together!!! Car is really starting to fly.....9's should be around the corner. I had my doubts when you used to switch shops on a weekly basis, and post up all your crazy posts. Now its seems that everyones ideas are really coming together for some fast, LOW 10 SEC PASSES! Not bad for a few years work!!! I thought those NA 346's where fast with multiple 10.20's...bust then i see this YSTrimed 346 running 135, and I just gotta say "WOW"

Considering the stock cube mph record is like 142mph with an M6, I"m confident that the car will hit 140mph next time out.

For the curious the tune looked like this on the last run:

10.33@136
22 degrees of timing
C16
10.5:1 AF

We have since brought AF down to 11.5:1 and the car picked up on the testing we did at the warehouse. Might try more timing too.

Steve, the 1/8 was low, I think the car was too rich and did not work great in the first half of the track.

When you can launch of the brake you'll pick up a ton as well.

When are you hitting the track again?
