Default Confused with boost signal and Vacumm

Hi guys , I'm sorry if this sounds stupid but I'm trying to figure out how to install a Hobb switch for my water pump on a air to water intercooler. I know the Hobb switch is triggered by a boost reading for example 4psi , I read that I can install this switch on my intake vacuum source (vacuum manifold) , doesn't this read vacuum ? Which is the opposite of pressure ? This is where I'm getting confused. I also need to understand where the boost gauge gets its signal. I know this is a stupid question but thanks in advance

"vacuum" source, is just a name for manifold pressure source. It's one in the same, a source that references the absolute pressure in the manifold, whether it be in vacuum or positive pressure.

First, why are you running your water pump on a hobbs switch?

Second, put it anywhere after the throttle body. It doesnt matter if it sees vacuum. It doesn't care about vacuum.

I didn't want the pump to be on all the time for example at idle when it's not needed and only turn on when it sees boost

So with boost there is actually a positive pressure reading ? Wouldn't I loose power to my brake booster etc ?

yes, you'll want to put a check valve on your brake booster.

Thanks Doug , I was under the impression that there was always a negative reading (vacuum)in the intake manifold , now I know there is actually a positive reading with boost . I see I'm going to need a check valve for my hvac controls too.

So back to the Hobb switch, I can hook it up anywhere on my vacuum log?

Don't set it up that way. The entire cold side will be heat soaked. So when you get on it you have to wait for your pump to turn on and then wait to cycle cold water through. You'll have hot air for half your pull. Lol.

Also. Your car already has a check valve from the factory on the booster.

Default Map & baro

Hi OGoz, the term Vacuum is a term for measurement of an item that DOES NOT EXIST.

The term Pressure is what should be used.

I work with KPA, this is a measurement of pressure.

The value of 104 KPA is the pressure of the air at Sea Level.
The common value of MAP in a running engine, throttled, OEM Cams is 30 KPA
The common value of the engine at 14 .lbs of boost is 208 KPA.
The common value of your Hobbs Switch at 4 .lbs is 130 KPA when closed.

When this is understood, ALL will then make more sense.

Just need to steer entire industries and the worlds population to start calling everything pressure. Atmospheric pressure assisted brakes, atmospheric pressure carpet cleaning device... maybe we should call them depression cleaners. Hahahaha
