Default Wiring ALT UP?

I was told to use the brown wire coming off the (TRUCK) alternator with a light in between but can't get it to charge. Took it off and had it tested and it's a good working alternator. I'm doing something wrong. It's a 2005 alternator from a 6.0 engine ----in a 1998 Camaro not using a computer. Can someone explain to me how to get it to charge? Thanks Bill. Alternator is a four pin plug but with only two wires coming out of the plug. Thanks

Loop the bigger (probably red) wire back to the + stud and put a 100ohm resistor on the smaller brown wire to + ignition.

Thanks that gets me on the right track. Reason i say that is because i have a brown wire and a light than or could be even a white wire coming off the alternator. No red wire and both wires are small equal in size. Big help and thanks again Bill

Which resistor? 100-ohm 1/4-watt 5% carbon film resistor or

100-ohm %5metal oxide film resistor?

or does it matter? Radio Shack

Either one. I usually use a 1/4 watt carbon. The value doesn't matter much. Somewhere between 75 and 500 ohms.

Try a different light bulb. In the beginning testint mine out, i wired in my test light and it charged just fine. It should/will charge with just the one wire, the rewire is a sense wire and detects voltage, on my standalone I wired it to my injectors to account for any voltage drop

Another way is to use a relay. The coil resistance is round 75 ohms.

Excatly how would you wire it? I get lost when it comes to relays unless it's from painless with instructions. LOL On the relay you have the 87/86 then 85 and whatever else.

you are providing 12v to the light bult right? Alternator provides the ground when it isnt charging to turn the light on. If the diode trio fails, the a/c current leaks into the wire and DC current will see that as a ground also (light turns on)

12v to pin 85, pin 86 to the alternator. I prefer a light thought. Let's you know the alternator isn't charging and if you break or toss a belt

I got something wrong i guess. it's over charging 16 volts.
What I did so far was take a light out of a gauge i had laying around and ran a wire off the brown wire from the alternator to ignition switch and wired the light into this wire using the white wire off the light which resulted into nothing but then took the only other wire off the alternator and put it on the post back of alternator and it charged but 16 volts and probably more because my tester only goes to 16 volts. What is it I'm missing here?

I found out i was hooking up the light wrong but that didn't change a thing. Tried the relay set up and still pegging 16 volts. I had the alternator tested yesterday but i didn't bother to see if the man had been drinking or not.LOL. I'll try to locate a resistor before getting a new alternator.

Measure the ohms of your light. I just did a relay and its 75ohms. Have it tested again but go back and check voltage with them

Is your meter off by chance?

Still fighting the alt problem. Had to get fans on car before I could do much of anything because it was running hot anyway I got that problem taken care and ordered a 100ohm resistor and installed in line. Today was the first chance I got to mess with it and it still was spiking 18 volts at times and other times it was anywhere from 13.2 - 16 volts. Let it run a while and car can rough but the second i unhooked the alternator wire car ran smooth and normal but volts stayed at 12.2 never moving then wire coming off kill switch to back of alternator started smoking and melted all to hell? Ran new wire from kill switch to back of alternate tried running car again volts all over the place and wire got pretty hot and again unhook alternator wire with the 100ohm in it volts drop to 12.2 but car stopped missing and smoothed out. Anyone have any thoughts on whats going on?

Can you link a diagram or draw something out that shows how the system is wired with the switch involved

On the kill switch is two small places with hook ups/ studs..one on top and one on bottom the one on top has a wire coming from battery and one bottom is the wire going to back of alternator if you can follow me?
