Default Best longblock for junkyard build?

Hey guys, was a member YEARS ago, when I had my machine shop Race-Prep out here in Palm springs area, glad to be back!

Question is this, I have a 1967 Camaro that's completely back half with a Top Gun 4 Link set up for big tires the whole shebang, my question is what is the best long block to do a simple junkyard turbo build? I might go the really cheap route with an eBay kit but probably use decent turbo stuff. I'm just wondering what's the best bang for the buck with all the factory long block stuff. I was looking at a 2005 5.3 that I can get for about a thousand bucks shipped to my door, that seemed like a pretty good deal but I wanted to get your opinions. Any extra info you can provide would be helpful thank you. Oh also I am planning on doing a low boost blow through carb setup at first just for the sake of saving money since I have to finish the entire rest of the car. I can always swap on some good EFI at a later date

Thanks!

I copied one of sloppy's builds. 2004-2006 5.3. Rear cam sensor. Has the stronger internal without the vvt. Paid $600. Then installed a trick flow 216 220 cam and pac 1218 springs. Then bought 650 csu carb from kevin. On3 78mm turbo. Cx racing turbo kit. Holley intake. Should be good for 500-600 rwhp. Maybe later i'll step upto bigger and badder parts.

Nice!, with that set up how quick are you coming to full Boost? Just curious. And what kind of a stall seems to work the best? This will be my first turbo setup

Check out my build thread for a few ideas... I paid $500.00 for my 2003 5.3 and added some Brian Tooley goodies... boost comes in around 1700 rpm and has a smooth curve to 6000 plus

For 1,000 bucks you can get a good 6.0 in these parts. It looks like your car is ready for the horsepower so do that and follow the sloppy mechanics recipe for 700-800whp

Sweet Nova! I've been trying to find a long block with less than 100K on it, do you think it's okay to get something with more than that I'd like to have this last a few seasons at least before having to rebuild it.

05+ have stronger rods. The rods/pistons will swap into the older engine fine.

The 216/220 cam is extremely mild. Decent little cam. LSA is 114.

Really think on that blow through carb setup as the setup could end up costing similar $$ to efi right the first time... keep the stock truck intake and it has a built in regulator and return rail... saves $$ and makes great mid range power (lots of write ups out there)...

Definitely.

Its always been cheaper for me personally to go EFI, but I have HPtuners and do my own tunes so it comes out a few hundred bucks cheaper vs carb.

Better off with the truck intake, more power believe it or not.

Look up Sloppy Mechanics ... they have a tune cabinet with base tunes to get you rolling and some recipes for success/ final tunes .... They also have a nice wiki with some good information on it

Perfect that's exactly what I was hoping for thank you! It's hard playing catch-up with all this Tech these days, when I was doing this the LS1 had just come out, we were doing some pretty cool stuff back then. When I was porting them I was getting the old 6 liter truck heads to flow 325 and 330cfm! We're also one of the first shops to do the Darton sleeve kit and build a 434 cubic inch LS..

It's cool to be digging back into this stuff it is amazing how far it has come!

Great stuff, anyone have an opinion on how long a 4l60 will last behind a turbo 5.3 on low boost in a very light car? Mine should be under 3k with me in it, and I found a engine /trans combo with low miles for a decent price. Was originally going to do 4l80, but this came up and I'm considering running it till it breaks if it won't be like a week lol!

Thx!

A stock 4L60e won't last long at all. You'll lose third gear in a hurry.

check out LKQ online for working motors that you could just drive and pick up. I used it a few years back when I bought my LQ4 engine for $650-ish (see firebird mods in sig below).
