Really weird puff of smoke on hot start only
I can't figure out why I'm getting a puff of smoke (oil burning) only after hot start. Before I go any further, this is not a typical bad valve seal type issue. I'm not saying its not the valve seal but I know a lot of people see puff of smoke on start up and immediately say valve seals. The car can sit for a day, a week or month start right up and there is no smoke at all.
This issue is only after car is at operating temperature. I shut it off for more than 10 minutes but not more than 2 hour. If its allowed to cool there is no puff.
So imagine you go to get gas, shut down, start back up a few minutes later no smoke.
I go to the store for 20 mins, start it back up I get the puff.
Cold start in the morning equals no smoke.
The refreshed engine has 600 miles on it using 15w40 conventional as Im still on break in. Its a 6.0 iron block, stock crank, callies rods, weisco pistons.
Same turbo kit, same turbo and drain setup, for the last 6 years with zero issues like this before the engine was freshened up. The turbo has no shaft play at all and I don't believe its turbo related.
Ive been running 2 open breathers one on each valve cover for 6 years with no issues.
This was a basic rebuild using the same pistons, rods, crank, block and heads. I just put a new cam in and timing set and had a valve job done with new seals. Obviously new rings and bearings were put in as well.
The car runs perfectly, no noises, great oil pressure, no smoke at all while driving.
Any ideas?
Alex

I mean its really not that minimal. Yes it only lasts a second but its really not cool to be at a car meet or a grocery store start your car and smoke people out. Plus Id just rather fix it. It was never like that before.

Regular journal bearing turbos do not have oil seals anyway, so there are none to fail.
If anything though a thinner oil is more likely to keep them happy with regards oil moving correctly through the core and back out again.

Something else I'd like to mention is I have a mysterious oil leak. It seems to be coming from the oil pan gasket and maybe rear main.
It's weird,I think it only leaks under boost. If I clean it all up and don't run the engone it doesn't leak. If I clean it and just idle the engine I see no leak. If I go drive it and get in boost, I lift the car up and the pan is wet. Nothing abobe the pan, like not coming from breathers.
New pan gasket, torqued. It's nothing basic like that.
I know I don't have a pcv but I've been running these same open breathers for ever.

I had a 6.0 in for mysterious puff of smoke on warm restart and it was a leaking injector. Found it watching fuel gauge drop to zero after it was shut down for a bit , didn't smoke on cold start because fuel evaporated I'm guessing.
Might not be your problem just stating what I have seen.
In my opinion if it was the turbo pooling oil it would still be there in 2 hrs or 2 days...

It's not fuel definitely oil. I really dont think it's the turbo. If it leaked oil into the turbine housing it would still be there 2 hours or days later. It's like something leaks but then if the engine cools down it disappears.
This is seriously so weird. It all started after the engine rebuold. And it was just a basic rebuild. Just new bearings, rings, cam, gaskets.
