Default Head Selection on L33

So I am building a L33 and wondering what everyone thinks as far as head choice goes for this. I have a nice set of 799 heads that have been ported and seem to flow pretty well. My concern is the compression of the L33 with these heads. They have been cleaned up on the deck, but just a little. C/R will be what, 10:1 with the flat top pistons give or take just a little. I am looking to run around 18psi through it, and just want to be able to keep the tuning window safe. I wonder if I would be better off putting 241 heads on it that have been ported, to get the compression down a little? Whats your thoughts, and why?

I'm sure a lot of people will say you'll be fine at 10:1, I'll let others with more experience comment on that.

Just telling you what I did, I sold the 799s off my L33 to a friend who was looking for a set and milled some 317s down .020". They ended up around 68cc, which puts the L33 around 9.5:1.

Cam only L33, Billet S480, 93 and washer fluid, 24-26 PSI and thousands of street miles. No signs of detonation.

Porting stock heads is pointless on a turbo deal. If ur gonna spend the money just sell them and go as cast trickflows

So go to the trick flows just to reduce CR since flow doesn’t matter?

Why would going trickflows reduce compression? You can get them in many different chamber sizes.

and flow does matter, 243/799 flow plenty in stock form to make more then a stock block is capable of making. Porting the heads will reduce the amount of boost to make X amount of power but cylinder pressure will still be the same so it won't matter.

if you're going to upgrade heads then a thicker deck trickflow only makes sense.

I ported my own heads. Yeah yeah, I have heard lots of people say I probably ruined a good set of heads, but it's not the first set of heads I have ported, and the track #'s say the #'s are there. Besides, they are only 799 heads anyway, it's not like I just hogged out some high end heads, so all you haters, get over yourself.

Thanks Joe! I tend to over think **** and shouldn't.

Slow, .....

"and flow does matter, 243/799 flow plenty in stock form to make more then a stock block is capable of making. Porting the heads will reduce the amount of boost to make X amount of power but cylinder pressure will still be the same so it won't matter. "

Boost is just a number from restriction, cylinder pressure won't be as high, if that restriction is lowered providing the restriction is on the exhaust side of the head.....right?

I do agree with the thicker deck making sense. I should have clarified, I have no intentions of swapping to anything aftermarket at this point. 241's/ 799/243's or 317's only.

People always say CR is a benefit. Where? pre boost? I doubt you would notice because a properly built setup goes right past that area and wham.....
Was my old 498 more torquey? Yeah, for an instant.
No expert here, but we dropped CR on a few turbo Hemi,s, and holy cow...…..
I got it that you wanted to know about CR with stock heads.
You are on the right track.
And yeah, I ported my own 799's. Was just fun to do. Car runs purdy good.

Thanks Ron, and yeah, I would say I think you know your ****! From what you said, you have a few more years on me, but sounds like we have done very similar stuff.

Ron, in some of Richards recent testing, they ran the 706,241,243,and 317!heads both n/a and boosted, you’ve probably seen it. The small valve 706 heads made a good chunk more power both n/a and boosted, than any other head tested, the next closest head was the 243, which is the next closest in compression. I do believe compression is a big benefit if you have the fuel and engine to support it.

Was about to post that too...the 706 heads seem to blow the rest away of the stock heads.

Cammed 5.3L 8psi... 706 makes more than 317:

4.8L, Stock cam, 7.5psi, 706vsTFS 205. TFS 205 wins.

Interesting. Are the 706 stone stock?
I have a nice set here. Might be worth an experiment next year
Thanks for the graphs

The 706's have smaller chambers ? I wonder if that is part of the reason ?

Either way, the above is good info that they do work well...and also a basic as cast aftermarket head works considerably better.
