What's your engine cost?
I was figuring AFR heads into my pricing. If you are going to use your current heads then the price would be reduced. But we still need a camshaft, roller lifters, pushrods, probably springs and touch up of your heads, set of adjustable rocker arms not the non adjustable junk most guys try to get away with. That will add another $2 - 2.5K to the above pricing bringing it to $10 - $10.5K with your heads. You will need gaskets, fasteners, a good balancer, a new oil pump and associated parts like new pickup tube and so on - figure another $500 - $600 for these parts. I assume you have an oil pan, front and rear covers, valley cover, etc. we can use off your current engine. If not I'll have to come up with those pieces. I have not yet priced in any labor to assemble the engine or balance the crankshaft assembly. Assembly includes cleaning all the parts, deburring, checking clearances and adjusting as required with over under bearings, gapping rings, degreeing camshaft, getting rocker arm geometry correct, (not just the pushrod length but the installed height of the rocker arm stands), etc. My normal charge is $1K for assembly on this type engine and between $200 and $300 for balancing not including heavy metal if required, depending on time involved. Add this up and you are up to $12K using your current heads. Michael, this is in no way a money maker for me as it will take the better part of a week to properly assemble an engine. I make more money in a day machining a block for sleeves.
Someone I'm sure will do it cheaper but not better. If I do a job I do it right or not at all. I do not cut corners on parts or labor to save money. It always ends up more expensive in the end doing things that way. I have two short blocks coming in to repair that guys had done by hackers elsewhere to save money.

Thanks,
Mike
Mike,
I have around $40K tied up in mine.
