Should it be clattering at this low boost?

I heard it. Right at the shift recovery. Have you verified timing with a pointer and timing light? Do a leak down and compression test and see what’s up.

yeah dude put some boots on when welding. that **** is no joke. i burned the bottom of my feet really bad when i was about 25 hardfacing a drag bucket. i was sitting on a block of wood with the soles of my boots together in front of me and I musta hit some porosity b/c it blew about a half pound of molten steel into my lap (luckily leather apron or i'd be singin castrato!) well that **** ran down onto my boots and as soon as it hit the welt it steamed the leather and cooked my goddamn feet! smelled like bacon i **** you not. i was off work 6 months and developed a nice little taste for pain killers that took another 6 months of ****** around to get right. wear some PPE ya ding dong!

I know. I dont do it often. I onlt do it tig welding. If i stick or mig, yea I have boots on. I was more or less making a funny, I dont make a habit out of it. If im working on something and i happen to have flip flops on (its hot here in Louisiana) and i need to tack something or a minor weld, I dont put my welding gear on. lazy i guess.

i have not verified timing. I guess maybe i should, didnt think of that.

You also gave me am idea. It does happen right around the shift recovery. I can add some timing retard on the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. It does jump up in boost right when i shift. Glad you pointed that out. I'm not sure i need to do a compression test yet. I hear no noises and it runs perfect still. I have a very keen ear too. thanks for the suggestions and making me realize that about the shift.

Doesn’t seem like much timing (if it’s correct) for 8.5-9 psi to make it rattle. I’ve never messed with pump gas before either, so take that for what it’s worth. I agree though, an easy test would be to knock some timing out of it (like 4 degrees 300 rpms on both sides of the shift recovery rpm) and see what happens. At least that’s what I’d do.

I am. Its only done this when it was really cold out. It makes 9.8psi on the shift and them settles back down. My logs show 170kpa (10.2psi) on the shift and 160kpa (8.7psi) shortly after

Just pulled a plug. I have tr5gp in it. Platinum. So that’s even hotter than a tr55?

Well my dudes, I just want to thank you guys. The plugs appeared to fix it. It idles no different. Drives no different. But when I put the hammer down....she gets it. The detonation was definitely taking big power away because it pulls harder than it ever has. I made a few hits just now and I’m happy. All the plugs that were in it showed no signs of detonation however and looked perfect actually. But I know that’s what I heard for sure. It’s 49 degrees right now so it’s about as cold as it’s been when it was pinging.

Holy freakin glow plugs, dude. Also, remember to ramp your timing back up after max torque rpm. You will lose a lot of top end power if you don't.

Good deal...Were you logging when you heard the knock? I'm curious if it showed KR at the time and how much. Even with the slightest amount of KR less than 1 I found at least one plug with a black spec on the porcelain when I was on pump gas. I'm not sure about the availability of E85 for you, but I think you will love it. When I was at 8 psi on pump I could only run peak timing of 13. After switching to E85 on 11 psi I have peak timing of 17 and never did encounter knock I just stopped there. That was with tr6 plugs in both circumstances. Now I've switched to br7ef plugs and going to 12 psi, but it's winter so the car is put away so I haven't been able to test it out yet.
