Thats right.

little update. Nothing fancy progress, just smoothing the s... out of the engine bay. Front supports are now fully removable, so i can just slide the engine in. And oh, i did order a new engine. 2002 LM7, 6 to 8 weeks until it arrives, i cant wait!

New engine FINALLY arrived. Should be 2002 with 121k miles on it, but who knows. Cost me assload of money atleast.

No idea how long it has stand, did a compression test and here is the first results "out of box":
1. 175
2. 165
3. 160
4. 180
5. 150
6. 125
7. 220
8. 140

Then i add little bit of oil and got this:
1. 200
2. 190
3. 185
4. 210
5. 195
6. 175
7. 220
8. 180

What do you guys think? Cyl 6 is a bit low or does it matter? Anything else i should look before i pull the heads?

You need to investigate number 6. No so much because of the number itself but the difference between it and the others.

I started to open the engine and first thing i saw was one lifter drifting like a mad man.

I guess you can call that a former lifter. Also the inside of that block was black AF compared to the old one and lots of metal in the oil pan. Cylinder walls looked really good though, not a single scratch or anything. But because that lifter failure and metals in oilpan, should i overhaul the whole engine or change the cam and cam bearings, clean everything up and just send it?

Even visually there's a lot of metal dust there, over the camwheel etc.

IMO, that engine needs to come apart and be throughly cleaned.

And is that a small crack on the block just above the lifter bore ? Or just a casting mark on the photo ?

You're right, already paid so much for the engine, so it would be stupid just mess it up because trying to save couple bucks.

Thank you for the thread updates. I enjoy seeing your progress. What country are you in? I feel bad for fellow enthusiasts who have to hunt around for parts. Where I'm located the local junkyards are full of 4.8 and 5.3 engines and fairly often have 6.0's too.

Thanks man. I live in Finland, green party shines, gas is only tiny bit less expensive than gold (6.5 dollar per gallon),parts are hard to find for sure and expensive to order. So not exactly my kind of country but what you gonna do..

I have set of these bad boys. What do you guys think, im using my old LS1 crank, because it is in mint condition and the other one is for gen 3 5.3 rods and has remarkable wear. I checked my old 5.7 rods, pistons, rings, bolts and bearing combo and got 1293-1295g. Same gen 4 set was 1301-1303g. Weight difference is not that much, but do i have problem with balance because rods are indeed heavier? Im trying to avoid balancing these with mallory metal.

Does balancing fit into your budget? Some people do things as correctly as possible within budget and will balance that setup. Others will say "They're within 10 grams or so, I'll put it together." Which camp do you fit into? It's not my engine so I wouldn't try to influence you one way or the other unless I thought there was a high chance of things going wrong. I think it's possible that not balancing will present problems but not necessarily probable.

I will do it right and get it balanced. I dont count my budget that much, it just takes a little bit more time to build. Better make it right at first time than take it apart again after awhile. Thats the reason i just ordered new pistons, old ones had minor dents on it.
