FWIW, I bought an old school Harley that had a velocity stack on it with a mesh screen. I pulled the intake manifold off the bike at one point and noticed that both cylinder head intake ports were a bit beat up from how ever many miles of debris getting sucked past the screen. Needless to say, I now run a more traditional air cleaner setup utilizing a K&N air filter. Just something to consider.

You'll need to change rings and hone cylinders sooner. Not sure about oil.

I think its' a gut feeling thing...

What's your take on it?

Not doubting that all.

I should at some point post a picture up of my ghetto *** shield.

It blocks everything from below - which is most of the dirt/debris would originate.
It also blocks a little bit of the sides, for extra protection. The only place it truly gets most of its' air, is from above, near the radiator.
On the *off chance* something larger does get through, the wire guard will stop it.

Am I dirt proof? Hell no.
Am I dangerous pebble/object proof? I could say with confidence that I am.

I have inspected the impellor and throttle body blade itself after a thousand miles running this way (I know, a thousand miles isn't saying much):
The volute is clean, the impellor is clean
The throttle body blade is clean, with no scratches.

"This guy is in denial" - fine, I get it. To each their own.
Nothing will beat a full fledged filter. Period. But you can get pretty damn close.

You are in pretty good company. None of the airlines put filters on their jet engine intakes. Of course they also do extensive maintenance. Big difference between everyday drivers that are never maintained and most of the cars discussed on this board.

Water, ice, and birds. All put a crimp on things at altitude

Birds not good, Ice rarely a problem, Water not a problem ....they fly in the rain all the time but none of this has anything to do with a vehicle that travels at ground level anyway.
Dust will kill a cylinder in no time at all, I had a fresh piston and rings in an dirt bike and it only lasted few hours of trail riding because the air filter boot ripped when I put it together and I missed it. It still ran good but I could tell the power was down and when I pulled it apart it looked like the piston and cylinder wall had years of run time not hours. I know a car won't see that type of environment on the street but dust will certainly shorten the life of the engine.

nah I'm mostly playing. Ive only killed 1 piston in i dunno how many builds and combos in the last 3 years. BUT i did just get some eighty dollar chinese 120lb squirty bois that are basically guaranteed to kill something, so look for an engine internals part out soon

I'll admit I did hurt a JY 5.3 recently, Didn't even get much further than the initial tune. It had a 6-71 blower on it and I just had the blower rebuilt, It was supposed to make about 8lbs-10lbs of boost with the pulleys I ran, It made 14lbs at about 2,800rpm and butted rings and popped a ring land. It didn't hurt anything other than the one piston so I'm just going to toss in a used piston and rings and run it again. Lesson learned = Start the tune on E85 and not 93.

It's a stopgap until I can fit a real filter. No need to get your elitist panties in a bunch. Go blow some more ringlands rofl
