Edited: So I found a similar discussion (Procharger) with real results and it looks like running a filter may hurt or may improve power depending on the setup. it's a good read. Procharger: No filter vs. inlet bell vs. pro-volute

The screen would be a big restriction if flat like the one you pictured. If rounded or cone shaped, it might have enough open area to mimic an open inlet, but even then, you would have some restriction. If used for actual filtering purposes, the only use it would be is keeping out birds and small mammals. The dirt and dust normally associated with long term wear will still get through.

If there was a way to measure all the screen wire you would prob see x amt. of
blockage-more or less than a filter? As said, if on the street it wont block all the
fine dust that is made up of rocks, etc. When I was racing some I used a larger screen,
more to block larger stuff, like loose wires, hoses, cats, dogs, etc.

If you run a screen and no filter - Change your oil often. I know hardly anyone here waits 6k miles even on a normal build, but anyway, you want to keep the oil clean.
Every 2k miles without a filter imo. I don't have any kind of math or proof to back this up - just the ole gut.

I run a shield, with a big hole screen, not a mesh like that. I just change my oil every 2k miles... The oil comes out pretty clean so I'm not concerned.

I've only tested 2 different screens. One with a lot of smaller squares and finer wire, similar to the one in the OP. The other had wider squares, but thicker wire. When I put the finer screen on, I lost 3-4psi. Change back to the larger screen and gained that psi back. I do not know if I would have gained more psi without a screen entirely. Running with only a screen resulted in a bunch of dust in my intercooler piping. Since I am building a motor, I will be running a filter when its back up and running. Probably pull the filter off when i want to race the car.

Had no idea these were such a restriction. I have the turbo guards 4” inlet on turbos. I wanted a filter but read these flow way better. Now starting to think just run filter cause screen isn’t drastic difference. My car will be on street mostly

Why not just run a cone filter on the street and take it off at the track?

Space constraints is why I daily drive with no filter in the streets, so far no issues.

But I fabricated a shield for my head unit. And in running a thick wire/big hole screen.

It's dust that is the only enemy at this point. No rocks, or any small hard objects will get to my impellor. But that's why for me, I don't have a filter. Maybe one day I'll make space for it.

I learned my lesson very quickly as well. When I first got the blower on, I convinced myself "psht, no way I suck anything" - and was desperate to hear it run and experience it. So I took it out for a quick test. Literally the first 3 minutes, I sucked up a hard clot of dirt - and realized it when my throttle body was extremely rough.

Drove straight back home, put the car away until the weekend. Fabricated a shield, and put on a thick wire mesh.
Never will I ever run the damn thing naked again. I'm surprised my paranoid side even allowed me to run it naked.

For some reason I never had to learn myself a lesson because I always felt like no filter or just a screen was NEVER a good idea. I went through a bit of trouble to install a large airfilter on an intake tube going to the turbo.

Changing your oil often because you have no air filter on the turbo.....maybe I'm missing something, would you care to explain your theory on this.........

Not all of us are as smart as you are Kfx. Some of us have to learn the hard way.

Missed this earlier:

Honestly, I just figured that if I'm gonna be mean to my engine and make it suck up dirty air, that the oil would be quicker to contaminate over time.
I think its' a gut feeling thing...

What's your take on it?

Anyone use one of these yet? I am running the Turboguard with hexagon holes on my S475 and would love a little more protection.
