Intake runner runner length/ plenum volume and FI

Default Intake runner runner length/ plenum volume and FI

Recently I’ve been doing my best to research a proper intake application for my car.
427
twin 72/73 FI turbos
Rpm of 7500-8k
t56 trans
I understand the basics of long runner vs short runner affects vs tq and hp on NA applications. Just hear to learn more.
i currently have a shorter runner intake for the car.
I also understand proper air flow distribution to each cylinder is more important than either runner length/volume. Looking forward to discussion

I have taken a trick flow BBF A-head intake and don't remember all the the runner lengths, but the motor peaked at 7400 and fell fast. We then cut the plenum out built a sheet metal plenum and had a total intake runner length of 10.5 inches. The motor then peaked at 8100 and carried to 8600 before starting to fall off. The new plenum was close to 470 ci since the motor was 483 ci. This was for a n/a high revving truck pulling motor.

Even on a boosted application, the intake still effects the power curve as Shawn showed with his testing.

Does this length include the intake tract in the head or just the intake manifold runner length?

If you have the room, just do a HiRam or ProFlo.

If you have the money, then some of the fancy billet CNC'd stuff could be an option.

Keep in mind that the formulas for runner length ASSume that manifold pressure is roughly atmospheric. Doubling the pressure (14.5psi of boost) would result in half the required runner length for the same tuning frequency (RPM), which also includes the port in the head.

The moral of the story is that with boost, you can get away with surprisingly "short" runner lengths and still make great midrange torque along with top end power. Doing so on a large displacement engine like a 427 only makes this even more forgiving in the real world. My vote for your application would be for generally more plenum volume and less runner length.
