Default Muffler for external wastegate dump.

Anyone ever try this?
I would just plumb the dump pipes back into my down pipe but my setup is a rear mount and the turbos are my mufflers.

The turbos do a decent job quieting down the exhaust when the gates aren't open, but when they open, everyone knows it. I put a 14" straight through bullet resonator type muffler before each turbo and its brought the sound down quite a bit with almost no effect on my spool up.

The sound is very nice and deep now but again, soon as both 38mm gates open it causes passengers to cover their ears. PIus it would also be nice to hear the turbos some more at wide open, the spool up sound is like the turbo on a diesel truck with the turbos being rear mounted, that is until the wastegate drowns out everything.

So, go ahead and laugh.. but what about putting a small, straight through dirt bike type muffler or glass pack on each gate? Theres not much room which is why I mention the dirt bike muffler. I'd be looking at a cheap aftermarket one thats a straight through design so it flows well, not some restrictive OEM muffler.

Thoughts?

Many front mount setups including factory tie the wastegate pipes back into the exhaust. Doing it on a high performance turbo setup seems silly. The assumption is if the gates are open you're at full boost, let the car talk.

I agree with ddn as i like the sound of open wastegates but your idea shouldnt cause any issues. People run there wastegate discharge into there regular exhaust and through a muffler so why couldnt you use a dedicated muffler for you wastegates if you want it quieter.

I made some small ones for mine, although they didnt make a lot of difference. Although I was very limited with space.

It's odd really...inside the car it sounds very loud. But outside....it really isnt.

I bet that's the same case with mine then beacuse of where they are located. They are right by the rear over axel pipe and dump under the car. I found two 12" straight through glass pack mufflers for $12 a piece. For that price I figured itd be worth atleast trying.

Mine are right beside the transmission....so well within earshot.

I made a simple tube/flange in stainless, and then the can/discharge side from aluminium, mainly so there would be less weight hanging off the gates. The alloy bit simply clamps onto the flange, so it can be removed/repacked easily.

Havent actually tried to re-pack them yet though

I ran a WG dump through a 1.75" glass pack and was pretty disappointed with the results. Re-routing back into the downpipe was much better. If anything, having all the noise point out the back rather than bounce around under the car made the biggest difference. Same goes for downpipes emptying under the car vs. out the fender. Inside the car, you hear the stuff under the car way more.

Thanks for the input. So if you were to do it again and already had the glasspacks and dump pipes, would you go through the trouble of fitting them? or would you just put on the dump pipe by itself and make it dump out the side / back of the car?

Right now It's just all gate, no dump pipe what so ever and they are right under the car and pointed down.

Interested to hear any results. I got a 2” large case resonator for my open WG Dump pipe years ago and never got to install it due to space restraints. I’ve been driving the car through the full exhaust and when the WG opens it’s pretty annoying since the car is pretty quiet with a full 3” exhaust and a Borla offset ProXS muffler which I get almost no turbo spool noise. With the cutout open I can’t hear the dump anymore lol but I get insane turbo spool noise. I was just looking at it again tonight and I have no east way to mount the WG recirculation back into the DP which is basically touching the WG flange. Also I’ve heard the WG in the DP restricts flow when it opens.
