Default Why not Garrett?

I am being serious...I read this forum a great deal and I never see anyone use any Garrett turbos.

My question is, why not?

Is it simply a cost issue? If so, I get that, they are not cheap.

But if it is some other, technical issue, then I would like to hear more about that.

Exactly, price and price alone. Typically Garrett and Precision are top of the pyramid with some sitting at $4-5k each. So if someone doesnt have a crazy engine build to justify a turbo capable of making huge horsepower then a typical budget turbo for much cheaper can be used without much, if any downside. That said since they arent as popular you can get some great used deals on them as they dont seem to sell as quick as the borg and china turbos.

I've gotta say that I went from a Precision 8891 (T6 1.08 AR, basically a worked over GT4508 or something as I recall) to a BW S488 (96mm 1.32 Housing) and I'm much happier with the performance of the BW. The Borg was literally half the price of the precision and performs better all around. Up to 1000 wheel I'd have a hard time justifying a precision or garrett. They're really cool, just huge, expensive, and not necessary for 99% of whats being built on here.

Garrett recently quoted me about $10,000 for new turbos for the Corvette. So... no.

Is it the GTW line that seem to be more of a budget type ?

Some of the new stuff like the G3 and G35 seem very impressive on paper, although they're quoting big numbers from very tiny turbines and housings etc. Will they really perform ? maybe time will tell.

But there are just so many cheaper options out there, the Garrett's just wont be that much better to make it worth it for the vast majority. 4cyl guys it may be different though.

But the same could be said for the likes of the BW EFR's etc. Been out a very long time, but how often do you see them on big V8's ? Almost never. Yet they're supposed to be fantastic on the 4cyl stuff.

The likes of Precision have it well nailed simply through a massive range of sizes and options and certainly over past few years, I've seen far less complaints online about people having issues with them.

But will say any 76mm billet wheel of similar specs, with similar housings sine massively over another in terms of power ?
Probably not. So many will just go for the cheaper units, unless they're rules racing where they need the absolute most within fixed size rules.

The likes of the G35-1050 or whatever it is....such power from a little 62mm turbine wheel ? Just seems far beyond anything else with such a tiny wheel. On any engine size !

That said, I've a friend over in Scotland putting a pair of the 900's on an LS7 type motor soon, although he is only after around 12-1300hp ( in a 4wd vehicle well under 2000lbs lol, probably closer to 1500lbs ! )

I looked at the GTW series before I ended up going precision. The BB option was similarly priced to the JB precision unit of similar size. After a little research, I only found them being used on the 4cyl Honda stuff and the consensus was that the precision still made more power.

Same question always applies...best for what ?

And as the new G series is just that...new. Only time will tell what they're really made of.

Although one thing I do like...they seem very compact.

If not best for budget....then Garrett or BW EFR are probably at the top end.

Although I also see Comp recently shouting about their turbos and their new turbine wheel design offering better performance etc.

Who can get RH to spend say $30k on a few sets of twins to test ? lol
