Default How much boost would you run?

Trying to decide how much boost to run.
  • 2005 5.3 L33
  • new stock crank
  • TSP I beam rods
  • diamond racing boost pistons and rings
  • ported/polished 799s
  • ed Curtis custom boost cam
  • Injector Dynamics 1050x injectors
  • Cometic head gasket and arp studs
  • d1x procharger with intercooler and bypass valve
  • Stock LS6 intake and TB
  • Built 4L80e with Circle D 3200
  • 9.9:1
  • 93 octane

I was thinking 10psi.
Will my LS6 intake and 9.9 CR handle this?

What's the goal? You have a setup to run more boost but you may not need to depending on goals.

You'll be limited by the the 93 octane and i doubt any can give you a hard number because there are to many variables. I run 10lbs with on a stock LY6 but run E85.
I popped the ring lands on a stock 5.3 running 14lbs on 93 while tuning, I didn't expect to see boost that high with my setup, Would have been fine on E85 though.

I can buy new heads and drop the CR but I really don’t want to run e85... you think 10psi is too much. I have some pretty beefy ring lands with the diamonds

Nothing at all. I think he was alluding to bigger to be able to push it on E85. Those will go as far as you can though on 93 (and pretty far on e60ish). I'd estimate you will be safe up to 750 max probably in the 12-14# range

FWIW I'm running 15 lbs on cam /springs lq4 11000 miles so far on a 180000 mile engine . 91-94 pump with water /meth. You should easily be good for more , for the cost water /meth is some good insurance. Won't save your rear , drive shaft or trans though ( broke all of those this year -at the same instant )

"Boost" is too often misunderstood, so don't be obsessed with a boost number. As said before, you haven't stated a power goal and there are too many variables for anyone to give you a boost number. Only the spark plugs can give you that. Nothing wrong with the components you have, but power output will be limited by the c.r. and pump gas and how long it lives will depend on the quality of the tune.

Sneak up on it with careful tuning and careful reading of the spark plugs. The plugs will tell you when to stop, regardless of how much boost you're running. What you need is OCTANE which is why folks are recommending E85 or some mix like E70 or E55. If E85 is not an option, then I recommend alky injection or settle for what you can get with a safe tune.

Then start with 10 pounds and see how you like it. Keep timing conservative.

I've been 26 PSI on a stock L33 with a small cam, billet S475 on 93 and windshield washer fluid.
Every time I've ever taken the heads off, the engine looks perfect inside.

Thanks guys.
as stated I have no goals and I’m not going for max power or pushing anything to the limits.
idea is to build it strong, use pump gas, and keep it “safe”. I may consider alky injection, but it is a daily driver per se so I’d really like to just gas and go anywhere. So I was looking for advice on where to start basically.
I have a built 4L80e and a built 8.8 diff as well as full tube race spec front suspension and cal trac Springs, shocks, and bars in the back with g force crossmembers throughout. I’m not opposed to spending money but I’m not trying to set records.... just love to have the power there for when the road ahead clears a bit... Sorry I’m weird it’s just what I want

Meth injection is only used when you're above the set boost amount. You can use standard cheap windshield washer fluid in it, and you'll fill it up every X amount of gas tank fills. Its barely a hassle.
I used to just buy a gallon from the gas station for a couple bucks once a month and refill the reservoir while the pump is running.

10 PSI on a stock L33 is nothing. They've been ~40 PSI in a few cases. You're not stressing it at all.
