I’m not sure weather it is the reluctor off or just the original timing wizard setup being off . These values are loaded in the tune when you buy a 58x or 24x system . They are adjustable so it really falls on me for not verifying tdc and setting it up upon first fire up. I know better as I have made timing tabs and dead stop checked a bunch of engines in the past and have never seen one right on the money yet. 2-3 degrees is not uncommon but 5.5 is rare for me. Sometimes the details cost the most power.

Had that same 5.5 advanced with a microsquirt 5 years ago and torched a piston. Made me check everything from then on. My 5.3 was off to where I had to set it at 81.5 with the goldbox.

Thanks for updating this thread. It drives home the need to check the basics, that sometimes we all just graze over and "take for granted".
BTW, I absolutely love that new car! Can't wait for the updates!

So the reluctor wheel was clocked 5.5 degrees retarded off of TDC?
If that's the case, how does that happen?

I can’t say the wheel is off that far. The gold box uses a preset number for the spark pickup for number one cylinder and you really need to set tdc when building the engine to get it to match the trigger wheel. The gm ecu uses crank / cam signal coralation when the car is being built to set the ecu timing value. I talked to efisoure and he said they are all over but usually within 2-3 degrees.

Going try and make some runs tomorrow. Temp should be about 50* and sunny DA will be about zero at noon so if the track prep is good I should find out how much power an extra 5.5 degrees timing makes

Thanks Ron. If the track hooks it should be a fun day . At this point a 9 anything will be a move in the right direction.

Ok well I made a few runs today . Car was turned down a couple psi boost just because of the big timing change and I left it rich . Got paired with a linginfelter zo6 with a magnason on it . With a runs 9s lisence plate . so I only got .4 to build boost and only made 3.3 psi on the launch I ran a 10.00 to his 10.04 . Very close race so right there I knew I found the problem. It made 16.4 psi on that run. Next I leaned it out and turned it up about a pound made 17.3 psi boost I launched at 9 psi with a full .8 to build boost . Still 11.4 afr but went 9.79 at 136 . Next run I ran my buddy in his 540 chevelle. Left all alone but turned it up 4 clicks Left at 6.6 psi ran 9.65 at 139 and change on 19.1 psi boost but at a richer 10.9 afr as I keep my upper table rich in case of a boost spike . Car ran good and I’m sure with a little more tune if it could run 9.50 or 9.40 under 20 psi boost now that the timing is correct. Don’t skip the small stuff .

How’d the converter work out (flash and shift return)? What were you shifting at? Nice numbers.

I’ll check the logs but I’m shifting at 6500ish. I will look at that shift drop
the flash is good . My 2 step is 4000 and it will get there as fast as I push the throttle down

Yes Ron . It ran much better and it’s still rich . It had me fooled for sure I added one degree and it really didn’t respond but I guess 12 degrees is not much better than 11 .

So your “real” timing is only 12 degrees?

As far as rich, I never noticed huge changes from 10.9 - 11.4.
But 11.4 is easier on the injector duty cycle.

I run mine at 11.4 now cause I’m out of injector.

No not now . I’m 16.5 degrees now . But when I added timing before it really didn’t respond to it much but I was at 11 degrees thinking it was 5.5 degrees higher and went up a degree and it picked up very little. I didn’t want to make a big change as I thought I was at 16.5 and didn’t want to kill it but in reality I was still only 12 degrees. My 9.65 was at about 10.9 afr . I think a little leaner in the mid 11s and a stronger launch than 1.42 and it will go a 9.50 at 141 or so . I’m a lot happier than I was .
