Been chasing my tail lately trying to figure out why my setup doesn't make power. Was brought to my attention last night at the drags by multiple people that the headers glow cherry red during a pass and actually light up the engine bay area. I have a open engine bay Model T, so Its super easy to see. Just curious if that's the norm for these manifolds? I'm usually use factory cast manifolds. Wondering if I have some sort of excessive high/low timing going on and will dive into it further if this isn't "normal". I'm guessing it is, just thought I'd ask around.
Yes, the glowing is normal. EGT's can run from about 1200-1800F and the headers themselves can also get that hot. I was melting plastic **** like 3 feet away from the exhaust on the fender until I got more sophisticated with the heat shielding. Glowing like this is common on almost any aftermarket turbo setup.
I have zero experience with eBay turbo headers on a LS, but all of my small cubic inch turbos 1.8 Mitsubishi, 2.2 Chrysler and especially my 2.3 Ford would all glow. Nothing was heat wrapped in those, so I could see it.
Everything LS based I'm running around with is cast manifold, and heat wrapped, but I believe more importantly, isn't being pushed enough to make them glow yet.
