Ignition Coils D581 or Similar
Hi Everyone,
I've been doing a bunch of research into ignition coils for my build, just on a budget.
I'm building a forced induction engine and from what I've found, stock coils are fine for less than 15 psi of boost, in general.
My engine currently has no coils at all, so I'm starting from scratch, but I feel the D581 coils are exactly what I need.
I don't want to pick coils up from the scrappers since I have no idea what kind of wear is on them, so I want to buy them new,
If I search for 12558693 on Rock Auto I get quite the selection, but the question is, what would you pick?
12558693 Ignition Coil | RockAuto
I understand the ACDelco is stock, but has gone downhill (like most brands),
The price ranges anywhere from $22 to $65 (Canadian).
I personally feel the cheap is to be avoided, Japanese or German preferred, but also Standard Blue Streak come right in the middle at $39.00
What would you guys choose? Or anyone have any experience with replacing their D581 from the ACDelco original?
Thanks Everyone!

Not sure where you read that stock coils are only good for 15lbs of boost or less, but that's nonsense. ANY of the factory coils if wired properly and configured properly will run well and easily ignite 25lbs or so on E85 In my experience. (and more I'm sure) . I've run most of them with no issues. Getting genuine new coils is a pain. Almost stuck going to dealers or GMParts direct etc. Likely better going aftermarket if you want new. Won't cost you much more.
I wouldn't be worried about JY coils. Just try to find the most recent year you can and grab a set or two. I've played with dozens and dozens of coil sets and have had 1 coil fail on me over the last 15 years or so. Its not super common for them to fail. At least if you aren't pushing them super hard in my experience. The D585s you just need to be careful to limit the dwell times to around 4ms or less so they don't auto fire. Never had an issue lighting off anything with those at 4ms. I cruise around at 2ms with them.
I want to say that hellsbents10 guy was running like 40+lbs on M1 with the D581's and a lot of dwell. The factory stuff will go a long way.

Thanks!
I didn't realize they were that reliable, but I went to the local pick n pull and got a bunch of coils, they all looked to be in good condition and original with the white epoxy.
I did consider the D585's but like you say they will auto trigger at a dwell more than 5ms.

Def. gains to be had going to something nasty like IGN1's. But not necessary for mild stuff IMO. The 585's are reliable as well. Just don't run them at high dwell times they make plenty of spark at 3-4ms. This is just an assumption and could be false, but I'd guess the 585 are one of the most reliable coils due to the heat sink. Not saying they are the most powerful, but at low dwell they are likely more powerful than the other coils. Few videos floating around youtube where they measure spark energy stating they are anyway. The issue with the tests is they don't show coils like the 581's at higher dwell times.
