I'd imagine if your tuner runs it that way it's because he's learned that it works through trial and error which as far as I'm concerned, is far more valuable than theory.
If you think about it, not enough fuel supply is going to cause problems regardless of where the fuel comes in, if you have enough delivery then the layout should be inconsequential unless you really screw it up bad lol.
If you're looking at pumps on E85, take a look at the AEM pumps, they hold pressure higher way better than the Walbro 450 units.

Given it's at the lowest point in the fuel system, and the fuel system is designed correctly, neither of which are by accident.
And there is a little pressure on the return side, not much though.
