Default STS Questions for the DYIer

I am thinking about the STS kit on my Avalanche. I have always been a DYIer and was wondering what if any troubles a DYIer with mechanical knowledge(built 3 motors and 2 frame up hotrods) would run into?? I am sticking with just the 5 psi setup for a while considering I have never had a vehicle with boost and figure I would keep her at 5 until i get really used to it.

As far as install what is actually required besides removal of muffler and intake? How is the oil system plumed..do I need to drop the pan and remove a valve cover to plum it?

I did a search and most guys here have had a shop do it so i haven't found answers to my questions.

Any help from either the STS guys or anyone for that matter would be appreciated.

i'm wondering the same things. i'm not ready to buy just yet, but i plan on getting one, and doing the install myself.

the kit looks simple to install, and straight forward.

i hope it's just a bolt on and go type of install

The install is very straight forward. Put it this way, I only charge $300.00 if its on a stock car. You dont need any special tools really. A tap, 1 drill bit, jack stands if you dont have access to a lift, a sawzall. If you have built a ground up hot rod, it will be no problem. I have built a kit car Cobra from a bare frame and this is nothing compared to that. E mail or p.m. if you have any specific questions at all..

Would I benifit from a plug change here and which gap?? I am almost near my tuneup schedual anyway so I figured if I need to upgrade the plugs I will order them and just wait till I put the turbo on and push my old plugs a little longer.

Thanks guys

Also one more thing... T-stat??? stock or drop to 180/160??

Instead of a new thread I will just ask it here.... If I lok to go to 7-8 lbs with the Stock STS setup what if any upgrades will I need??
I would like to have the tune already set to accept the higher boost but want to make sure I have everything else covered. Is my only limiting factor the fuel system??

For 7-8psi what size injectors or what have will I need? I will run the truck on the 5psi setting 98% of the time... I just want the added 2-3psi on demand for race situations if they arise.

If you wanna run any more than the 5-6psi you are definately going to have to get bigger injectors (I recomend getting them anyway) and either an intercooler or methanol injection. Both would be best

I would tend to agree. Make it safer. Go with a little bigger injector and meth/alky injection and you are good at 7-8.

I think with low boost you can use the 8.1L 32lb? injectors and be fine but if you wanna go big and play with the big boys then the 8.1L Marine 43lb injectors would be best or even bigger if you go nutty

The 8.1L truck injectors will plug right into your harness and rails and tuning will be a snap. The Marine injecotrs will require lots more tuning.

Thanks.. this truck will always be my daily driver so high boost applications are not in my forseable future. I would just like to have the 7-8psi for the times i do tow my race car to the track and those occasional..just have to shut the guy up next to me ..times.

F8L.. you think the 32lbers and a meth/alky setup will be enough for the 7-8psi on occasion? Like I said before 95-98% of the time she will only be at 5lbs

Ohh yeah. I think it will be very easy and will leave you with a nice safety net Just be very careful or better yet ditch the Superchips tune and get custom tuning for best results. You can sell it, your headers, and your Volant and recoup some of the cost of the STS kit too.

At 5psi with some Alky you wouldn't even need the injectors at all. I am just a fan of overinjecting than underinjecting and running 100%+ duty cycles.

The onlything you need be concerned about with your plans is the fact that your tranny could go out on ya. Many do once they hit the 350rwhp range or so which you should hit NP. So just keep some cash saved up just in case

Be careful, going lean =
To be on the safe side, I would suggest bigger injectors and a better fuel pump. But I do not know if the same rules apply for the cars towards the truck. Once you start down the road of FI, things start to go expensive. If you don't want to spend that much money, be safe, and don't go the 7-8 psi with the Alky.
JMO.
Good luck,
Paul

Thanks for the advise. F8L I am leaving the headers on because of how great they are. I will be selling the Volant and Superchips and my muffler though. I am going to have a PCM tune done when i order the kit so I will install it all in one shot.

As far as the tranny... I already thought about it and am looking into haveing an old 60 or 65E built up while my tranny is still good and doing a swap when things go south.

I'll let you know how mine does with the stock manifolds.

I left my long tubes on when I did the first STS install but now I am sick of exhaust leaks and honestly I dont see how it is going to help any since the restriction is in the turbo which is farther downstream than the headers. Pretty much everyone I have talked to said it shouldn't make one bit of difference with headers or not so i said screw em. Now I am closer to smog legal and I'll get $450 out fo the headers and NO EXHAUST LEAKS!! Woot!

Rememeber that the 600rwhp LT1 that STS did still has stock manifolds on it too.

It just the fact I love the Dynatechs... I also through out the stock exaust when i did the Dynatechs.

I have no leaks and I figure once I put the STS on I will just have the STS flanged so I can bolt it up and also remove it without fuss if it ever needs to be serviced.

Make sure it seals perfect. It is very easy to have a small leak that will blow out boost.
