Default LS1 Turbo Kit

Why hasn't anyone made a 50 state turbo kit for the ls1? Seems like that would make an easy 500+ hp. Is there something about the California smog laws that prevent this? Also, wouldn't a turbo car be quieter?

STS has a kit but I didn't know they were trying to get is certified in Calif. Also, I read that their kit has limitations that others don't because of its layout.

STS has paid their $100,000 for C.A.R.B. approval and also had their initial testing. According to them it's the cleanest turbo ever tested in California (makes sense, it is a post-cat turbo...), so if that's the case, certification should be right around the corner.

Would the STS kit be too much for my stock bottom end with what my sig shows? Also, would the setup I have match OK with the turbo?

No, the STS makes great power on a stock motor. You can safely do up to 7-8 psi. Even with just 5 psi you can make 400-450 rwhp. All other turbo kits are not CA legal because they move or remove the cats.

from what i understand nobody's really pushed the limit on the STS kit, the Fbody application guys are still running low boost, and the high boost guys are the truck guys. im not too keen on the setup, but the price is good. i'd pick a carb approved blower myself.

I already have some mods which should be done this week. I expect about 400 rwh so far with about 11 to1 compression. I've read the stock bottom end and especially the pistons can go out easily. With the STS, I would probably be over 500 rwh.

Also, I interested to know if anyone has heard a V-8 turbo. I was thinking a turbo would be quieter than naturally aspirated but I've only heard rice burner turbos.

They can be just as loud. There are some LS1 turbo vids around. Look at the sponsors, JL Turbo to be precise. The vids kinda suck. The wastegate is really loud.

might have to rethink your cam and compression with a turbo.

not to seem like a thread theft or anything but, what is the safest amount of boost you should run with any forced induction system on stock bottom end?!? i know a guy around here who has the twin turbo setup on his ls1 and said that the block cant hold more than 5-6 psi?!? he said block, but i think he ment bottom end, but same question for the block as well! thanks

The most I would run on stock bottom end would be 8 or 9 psi.
Check out the FI forum on this site, there are more than enough people that could answer all your questions and then some.

I really like my STS turbo kit.

I might have went a lil big on this new turbo though judging from the extra lag. We'll see if it is easy to get used to. The first turbo had almost zero lag.

I'll get my intercooler on it and try to get some real #s

As far as how loud it is, it is not loud at all. At idle and driving around normal, my car sounds a little like Borla. It will attract attention when you get on it though.
I would think about changing the heads and cam. 11:1 is too high for FI.

Put a cam on it and gut the cats and it is pretty damn loud

I am actually gonna have to put a muffler back on it before I get a ticket!
