Default something interesting about diesels

I talked to a truck driver at work the other day and he told me his turbo on his Kenworth made 65 pounds of boost at 1700rpm and red lined at a little over 2000rpm. I thought is was kind interesting how much boost those big diesel engines can take. I also knew those trucks didn't turn that many rpms but I thought they would hit at least 3 or 4 thousand rpm. Anyway I thought it was kind of cool.

BTW. I saw it with the hood up and the turbo looked BIG and it had a huge FMIC the size of the whole radiator. Now if I ever hit the lotto I want to make a hotrod semi.......what do you guys think is 100 pounds of boost possible

I use to build large 16 cylinder CAT diesels for a living. We used to dyno them with 87lbs of boost if I remember correctly with two turbos. There was another model that had a turbo platform with 4 larger turbos on top but I can't remember boost on that one. So I'd say yeah, but not on a car.

My friends 04.5 Dodge 2500 Cummins, makes around 34lbs with a intake tube(piece of pipe to eliminate silencers in stock tube), no other mods.

If you have never been to a tractor pull or heard of them then look around at some pulling websites. It is regular for tractors to have 3 or 4 turbo's in a series pushing 250+ psi. One local runs 3 turbo's in series at 270#'s. Neat technology with water injection after each turbo and knowing they take a factory rated motor with 125hp and make 1500+.

Thought I would put my 2 cents in. I am an engineer with Cat currently, and my family has been into tractor pulling for many years. A stock semi engine won't make over 50 psi of boost. I know this because I worked in the test cells at the assembly plant, and they would auto shutdown if the boost levels went over 50 psi. Now, you could definitely turn the boost up. Some of their bigger diesels are making over 600 horses stock with two turbos in series.

And 100 psi of boost is possible, but maybe not smart . Tractor pullers use heavily modfied John Deere and International diesels, and they can run boost above 90 psi. Then again, they have to rebuild the engines every season.

Locomotives use a diesel engine to generate electricity - they are called electro-motive powertrains. I am not sure what kind of diesel they use to generate the power, though.

Some tractors are more stock than some think. The guy I mentioned before still uses the the stock crank and rods with custom pistons, factory head and a re worked injection pump. It is an international.

The alcohol tractors can get away with a lot less boost and still make big power. Most run 70-80 psi on alcohol and a lot more on diesel.

bowtieman, I have a few questions, what boost should a '92 model 3406( i think thats the number) but its a 425 C engine in a 92 peterbuilt make? What about the #'s on a '97 Cat 515 skidder? those just popped in my head, since we own one of each.

I did a big report on desiel engines last semester and i beleive the compression ratios on a cat engine was somewhere around 22.5:1.

That big 96' F350 CrewCab that runs 11.4@118mph with a Cummins motor and a TT setup at 96psi. He launches with 20psi and runs on 36" tires. LOL

That's some major HP/TQ to get a 7000lb+ truck to go that fast.
