I refuse to pay 4k+ for a turbo system me being a diesel mechanic and ex- girlfriend being a certified welder. i been told many thing one you can use mustang shorty headers and weld the ls1 exaust flang on it. i just want some direction on what i can use to make up the turbo headers. twin turbo i might add. any suggestions?

I suggest you get a kit. When you get a kit you get everything.

If you don't feel comfortable making the primaries, just see if you can turn some stock replacement headers or manifolds around. Or, if you get a flange and some mandrel bends, making a header isn't too difficult. I made one for my car, and made a merge collector, and didn't have many problems. Good luck!

There is someone, their screen name elludes me at the moment, but they have truck manifolds turned backwards. The way I undertood it was that they fit near perfect, with a little work that is. I dont know what it all entails, but its worth the research.

As has been said here before, trying to do turbo on the cheap is usually a bad plan.

LOL, spoken like a "never bought a turbo kit" guy

The most complete kit i've seen was the incon, and we all know what happened to them

Built your own headers and you'll have $1k in stainless. Just make sure your Ex isn't still mad at you, or you might get leaky headers

He bought flanges. He bought stainless tubes. He bought merge collectors. He used talent as a metal fabricator to build headers. It's simple, just dump all the parts in a bag, pour in some argon gas and a few welding sticks, heat it up in the oven and it's done.

I used a week of vacation time when I made them. Probably a solid 40 hours of work between the fitting and welding. It was just easier to have a chunk of time I could devote to making them.

im guessing thats not the first time you've ever made a set of headers either. or used a tig for that matter. hell heres how little time i have. i bought a lincoln mig about 6 months ago, mask, gloves, whole nine. has yet to see electricity. Some day ill have the time to learn how to weld. Im sure i could get the cuts down np. but from the loogs of it there are some tight spots in there which probably made the welding a little on the hard side.

Are those burns merge collectors? That made my life so much easier, I built a header for my wife's DSM and I used a burns merge collector, best wad of cash I spent while building it, made it so much easier than the last time I tried to make my own collector. Those whole headers look fantastic , way above and beyond my mediocre tigging skills.

00streak: You don't have to start on a project, using a TIG is a big challenge to start with, steel yards are usually pretty nice and if you ask for some small useless scraps to practise some welding on they are usually cooperative, that's what I did. Sit down even for 5, 10, 15 minutes a night and work on different techniques, it's the only way you're going to get better.
