Default Putting a fan on a fmic

So what do yall think? I really dont want to cut up my bumper cover (94 camaro), so I figured I could just put a fan on the back side like a radiator. Is there anything wrong with that? Thanks

Billy

Why? It seems like it would work. I thought about this the other day myself. I don't want to chop up my front bumper when I do my FMIC and it seemed like it would be a viable option.

I was also thinking about this Myself? NO idea if it would work? I have a 94 TA and there is no grill to remove? Part of what's holding me back it trying to figure out how I could get AIR to the FMIC once its in my car?

in theory i guess it *could* work if you can get a fan that flows enough cfm.

If you dont want to cut up the bumper so the intercooler gets more air flowing to it, then the best bet would be to just go without the intercooler and run a water/meth/alky injection setup...or run a very small shot of nitrous.

i think the problem is trying to find a fan setup that will flow enough cfm to make it worth it.

In MY case there is NOTHING to Cut out? Have you seen the front on a LT1 TA?
There is nothing to remove that will allow for air to flow threw it! I was starting to think about some custom body work JUST so that I could mount the FMIC?

Problem is if you have anything to close to either side of the FMIC the fan isn't going to pull much air through it. Have you ever placed a curtain or anything close to a regular cooling fan in your house? Obviously if it sucks the curtain to it there is VERY little flow but even putting something right behind the fan really close cause a major reduction in airflow. If the bumper brace is right behind the FMIC wouldn't this cause a similar effect?

sounds to me like you need to forget about running a air/air setup all together. Is there not someone who is making a air/water like the Vortech Aftercooler setup for you guys?

if you cant cut anything out to allow air how is putting a fan on it going to help, its like when you put a fan right against a wall, there is no air to draw and the fan just works harder and no air flow.

I was planning on just removing the fog lights and replacing them with the 1LE fog light delete grills since my car is an LT1 and possibly using a dual fan type setup to move a little more air. I am probably going to use a FMIC and alky injection. I'm just not going to cut up the front bumper on a nice car.

The fan will never pull enough air to make up for cruising air flow. Then as said above you will just be recirculating hot air.

It's not the cheapest solution, but you could always put a LS1 front clip on it. If I am not mistaken, that swap is pretty straight forward. Then you could just do the same cut-out that those guys do. I have also seen (not on these cars) intercoolers mounted horizontally with a duct or a damn supplying a nice amount of ambient. That might be worth looking into.

YA I hear what you guys are saying. Thats why I was also considering some custom body work to the front of the car. NOT sure where I could get it done at a resonable price? Changing the front clip to a LS1 front is not supper hard BUT it cost a LOT of $$$$$$$$$$$!

Ok well think of it this way. When you mount a fmic on a lt1 camaro, or any f-body for that matter, you cut the bumper correct. Well cutting it is going to weaken it severly so why not just cut the whole back side of it out, which I have seen done many of times. And air is going to go past the fog lights and into the front bumper cover were there is plenty of room in front of the intercooler and plenty behind it, so what would be the difference? The hot air from the engine compartment is not going to come into the front of the bumper cover, especially with a set of ls1 electric fans pushing it towards the back of the car. If it works for a radiator why couldnt it work for a intercooler?

I had an 8" fan on the back of my old Procharger setup. Seemed to work OK. I think it was a 800cfm or so fan. Still got it somewhere. I would only use it between runs or in the staging lanes. On the highway it's useless.

Fans have been used on IC's before. They work well depending on the setup. I will try to find some links to show you.

edit - It is pretty pointless on a FMIC, which is what your are talking about. Top mounted or Side mounted IC's would benefit better. I dont like the idea of top mounted IC's because the heat from the engine rises into it. However, the composite intake on these cars reduces the heat greatly, so it may be worth it if you could incorporate a functional hood scoop.

I would rather hack my front bumper
