Turbo Sound?

I have been watching a couple threads for the answer to my question, but havnt really got a concrete answer yet. I am woundering what makes that air noise on the big boy turbo kits. We have a few people here in town with the big thumper turbo's and such (over 100mm) and when they stall it up at the line it sounds like exaust for a second then comes this really loud air noise. I am woundering is this the wastegate being open to the atmosphere? Or is it just the big turbo? Thanks in advance

it's the big turbo...the sound of air being sucked in at large quantities and being compressed into the intake...same basic theory as a turbine powered jet...that's why they make a similar noise...the jet being much more loud of course though...it has nothing to do with the wastegate...the reason you hear the exhaust for a little while then start to hear the noise of the turbo is because the turbo is "spooling" or increasing the rpms of the impellar...once it gets to a certain speed you can hear it

Ok thanks that what I thought. So what does the wastegate sound like when its open to the atmosphere instead of run back into the exhaust? Is it just like a bad header leak? Thanks again

hmm...i don't know...prolly couldn't hear it over the turbo...the blow off valve makes a noise when it vents to the atmosphere..but i'm sure you already knew that...the wastegate, if you were to hear it, probably sounds similar to air coming out of a compressor...since that is what it basically is...header leaks make a ticking noise (i know cause i have one from !egr and a crappy block off haha) i doubt it will make a noise like that

i don't actually own a turbo car btw, so someone else may be better help...i've never heard a wastegate make noise before though...just speaking from personal experience
