How much do I have to bring my compression ratio down to get some worthwhile boost? I could swap in a set of lower compression pistons or go for the LQ4? heads off of a 6.0L to bring the compression ratio down to about 9.3... would that be low enough? Would that hurt my regular day-to-day driving much?

I'm looking for about 600rwhp and peak torque around 3500 rpm... and want to keep engine speed around the factory 6200rpm limit. I also want to keep the stock crank.
There is another option, and you mentioned yourself. Use a Supercharger.

Regardless of which direction you go, Turboing and Supercharging is not cheap, Anything over 550RWHP will require internal reinforcement unless you want to rebuild your setup every 6 months.

So not waste your time or money unless you are going to do it right. Very harsh words, but if you do it right the first time you will not be back in there and you will enjoy it.

There is no way to say this without pissing someone off, but, I really have a hard time with going to all the trouble to build a twin turbo setup only expecting to get 600RWHP.

I personally for the power range you are looking for, build the motor up as a N/A setup and forget the blown stuff.

if you dont like things getting expensive.. then pressing the issue on pump gas only probably isn't in the cards for you. cool project though!

Like bryan said 600 rwhp isn't worth spending the money on a turbo setup. That can easily be achieved with a nice NA setup and a small shot of nitrous which will also help keep it more streetable since even though I have seen many stroked and boosted cars running around just as good as stock.

Good luck though

That's fair enough and definitely well taken.... to control cost and get a 550rwhp car, what do you think about sticking with the stock bottom end (plus rod bolts), dropping the compression down to 9.2:1 with a set of 6.0L LQ4 heads and running a single turbo setup? I'm partial to turbo cars because I've had a couple and the torque curve is addictive!

Honestly, a lot of you guys have some hellishly fast cars... I really don't expect to hit that extreme because 1) I am on a comparatively modest budget and 2) having over 600hp isn't that big of a priority. I think a lot of you have $10,000 in you engine's alone... that's what I plan on spending on my entire project.... and only budgeted about $2,500 for mods to the LS1.

On the bright side, I can do pretty much all of my own work and fabricate a lot of my own parts... including all the exhaust off the manifold and probably any of the boost lines as well.

600rwhp is a reasonalbe goal turbocharged, its gonna take alot to get a 600rwhp NA motor can be done but it would cost alot and not be as streetable.
600rwhp all you need is a built shortblock and a capable turbo kit

^ agreed. I nicely forged 346 with a S/C or turbo should easily get 600 hp. You just have to remember when getting near that much power everything usually doesn't go exactly as planned and things end up costing more that they should.

For what it's worth, I just built a forged twin turbo 347" ls1 for $10k complete. If you can fo it all yourself and like to price shop, you can even do it cheaper if you have the time.

check out prochargers website, they have the highest pump gas car anywhere i think, 1685whp on a 580ci motor that runs 7's @ 170 on pump gas rofl
580ci is key...that is way bigger than the ls1...bigger cubes gives a much easier way to run big power on pump gas...it is almost an exponential type thing...you have to remember not every engine is the same and you cannot compare one to the other directly in most cases

I sent you a PM last night, but you could always go the turbo route, perhaps sacrifice a little bit of spool right now to meet your needs later (as long as the turbo is properly matched of course), baby the short block with conservative tuning and decent driving habits, and make that last for a while, and then when your budget changes, build a motor for it. I think some people have gone that route, and face it, project cars are just that, projects, they're never finished.

The pistons are not the problem, you can just as easily open up a head in the chamber, and lower the CR. But with the stock rods, you are going to be limited to 8psi(To be on the safe side), many here have run more than that but I really feel you are asking for trouble. If you are doing the work yourself, spend the money on a good set of rods, rod bolts, bearings, full floating pins and pistons with the right rings. If you are not having to spend money on labor, that is the way to go, then you can safely do one or two turbos, or do one and upgrade to two later.

IMO, I do not recommed using the stock rods and rod bolts. If you have to go in the motor, DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, or you will regret it when you have to go back in there.

One last thing, If GM and Dodge can build 500HP N/A motors for the street, the LS1 is good for 600HP and still be extremely driveable w/o the hairdryer. A lot of people said mine would not be at 800, they would have been mistaken also.

Food for thought!!!!
