Supra vs. Camaro?

I'm posting this in the turbo section because I think it's relevant to the whole forced induction concept.

Now 1000 ponies on a camaro is far from impossible but why does every supra out there seem to produce that number with minor tuning?
I'm curious about the sheer physics of it... How does a smaller engine (less c.i.) avoid detonation with that much boost? Is it in the compression ratio?

its called,. a fuel pump, fuel injectors, and a t88 turbo. Yea, there are supras out there that say they make 1000 hp, but most of the time, that huge turbo doesn;t spool up until 3rd gear, thats why they always want to race you frmoa 60,70, or 80 mph roll. Now, yes there are some supras that are stroked a bit and have cams and head work, and yea they make 1000hp but not that much lag, but there are only a few. Slap aball bearing turob and a 50 shot and they have practically no lag.

part of the reason is that, the supra was designed from day one to have turbos no it. When toyota was making the last generation of supra they were designing it to be a super car, but then realized that no one was going to pay 80k for a toyota, so they de tuned it slightly and sold it as it was.
the motor is built up from the factory, most of these guys when they need a new short they just buy another stocker. Much like the 03 cobra guys, their motors are uilt to handle boost.
if you look at most all the successful turbo cars they were originally designed to have boost on them, grand national, cyclone/typhoon, supra, mitsus, not a turbo but boost 03 cobras.
if its engenieered for it from the start it works better, something about the factory people knowing what they are doing, I dont know. I feel that is the larget problem with retrofit kits, people are making them that dont know enough about the cars they are going on.

Spend some time on the Supra forums and you will find that the vast majority will not run more then 600 rwhp without race gas. Guys have been blowing up their motors running less power then that on pump.
There is no doubt that the motor is a great piece of engineering and is well-built stock, but just like an LS1 it requires careful tuning once you clear 500-600 rwhp

Its all about design. Stout little motors.
The supra community is actually pretty tight. All the cars that are making over 1000hp pretty much know each other or know of each other. To say a 1000hp supra is common is a bit of a stretch, but to you can find a 600-700hp pretty regularly.

Yeah that makes sense, the GN's all seem to have a very blueprinted way of getting to 9 seconds as well. I kind of like that about the camaros, there's so many different turbo styles happening. That Stenod one looks absolutely sick, can't wait to see what power it's putting down.

I like my Supra.... ![Winky](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_wink.gif)
Here is a nice link to alot of the setups and cars.

BTW, over 1500rwhp has been done with a 2JZ through a TH400 unlocked using a GT47-88 and N20. No one has really found the limit to the engine yet. I think a 2JZ with stock crank and good rods and pistons could do maybe 1600-1700rwhp.

I am sorry but Supra's are Dyno queens, theres a ton of them running 1000 horsepower but on a handlefull can even break 10's. An F-body with the right mods will rape 99.9% of supras with only 600 Hp.

i know two out of the four guys in that SCC magazine..
i have a few friends with 1000 rwhp supras. They are a blast to ride in. Mind you though, ask how many did it on pump gas.. and they will shake their head "no" THey are on a leaded race fuel. with out it they would detonate and bang, but for what they can do.. it is VERY impressive.
we have more 800 to 1000 rwhp in texas then anywhere i believe.
these cars take money to just buy them and build them. F-bodies can do it.. it is just all in the setup and if you want to spend the money to do it right

Yeah, Marco's car is "da bomb diggity". ![Happy](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_stretch.gif)
Supra's, like our very own extinct cars, are awesome, period. I don't think 1000hp is the norm, but they're still stout cars and run really well.
If they weren't extinct like the F-bodies, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

from what ive seen a 650hp camaro will beat a 1000hp supra in the 1/8th everytime. its in the 1/4 that the supras come alive, but even then most guys with those 1000hp supras are not putting down times in the 1/4 that you would expect from a 1000hp V8 car.
