Default I am still learning about turbos

The short: less boost-more power

I dyno'd 703/775 with my converter locked on dyno and boost went to 20psi on my incons. This info will come into play later in my story.
I normally run 17 psi and had a best of 10.34 @ 136 in my CURRENT combo a week ago. I figured one more pass left...it's cool as the track is about to close (11pm), let me do a 20psi pass and get close to that 9 sec pass. Results at 20psi was a 10.25 @ 137 (6.6 @ 107 in the 1/8). I was very disappointed as 3 psi only got me .1 and 1mph. i figured thats all the kit had for me and I'm not gonna get any faster. On the way home get to thinking that maybe I am out of the efficeincy range of the little incons. So 2 days later I go to Steele..its HOT out..around 87-90 degrees. i start off at 13 psi...car runs 6.7 @ 104 in the 1/8...only .2 off my best 1/8. WOW...i go to 14psi and run 6.60 @ 105. Go to 15psi 6.6 @ 107....thats only .05 off my best and this is in some HEAT. Now I start adding timing since I am running lower boost. I eventually settle for 20 deg of timing as being SAFE and run 6.5? @ 108. mph. Now this is a tie for best et for me and a new best mph in the 1/8 on my current combo. i figure it has a safe tune for a full pass and go out and run a 10.12 @ 137 (6.5? @ 108.89 1/8) and it's still like 83 degrees out. I was amazed at the lower boost/more timing getting me a new best. I will lean on it a bit more next time with timing but definitely learned that more boost is not always faster. I will keep testing to find the "sweet spot" for the Incons. I suspect it is 14-15psi as mph doesnt pick up after 15 psi. My heavy pig really liked the extra timing. This was on 93+alky so i was trying to be a little conservative since it was also hot out. Lots of you guys are like "duh" I am sure but I couldnt get it through my head that lower boost might be faster. I have a FAST manifold coming and will be running that next time out and report the results with NO other changes at all!

thats still hella fast with the way your car idles and sounds when the cutouts closed.whats your 60ft look like?and whats your motor have it in?i would imagine 15psi with meth and a decent 60 would put you in the 9's.i am curious how that FAST will differ

You are definately at the end of the efficiency range on those turbos. You're adding heat and backpressure by adding more boost at this point.

Keeping the heat down and sparking for power is the right solution

I just got a new 60'...on that same run of 1.54. My motor is 348...forged rods/pistons and ported truck #317 heads.
Harlan, you know where they are most efficient? I have an old post from Inall saying he got 80lb/min at 12 psi thru some custom intake with the little incons. You and Mike Brown gotta laugh looking back at your old Incon days....I'm still there

sorry if this is a bit off topic, but where did you get your heads ported as ive got a set of LQ9's sitting in my garage that need some TLC.And correct me if im wrong but if you switched to Meth instead wouldnt that give you a boost in hp and most likely a lower et from that alone?

gtp s2 heads. I dont understand the meth part. I have pretty much always ran 93 + methanol. What are you asking when you say "switched to meth'?

you said you were running "93+alky" which is different.Meth will add horsepower from what i understand, while Alky will just lower IAT's and as a last resort you can use ethenol.there are differences between the 3.so which do you run alky or meth?

meth is alky ... methanol and ethanol both have very similar vapor points, flash points and octane ratings ... neither holds a performance edge over the other.

Of course, if you distill ethanol correctly (or incorrectly), you can drink it, whereas methanol is poisonous (but will still get you drunk).

ya not much mph change in any of those runs.
just a couple more mph's and youll get into the tens, can your add somem more meth to get timing up event more, since your not getting much more adding air?

Dont trust everything you hear on the internet. Just because this is a 'tech' site, does not mean all is fact. You get people on here talking out of their *** about stuff they really dont know much about....much the same as what you are doing right now....

Someone hears something and passes it on without confirming it with anyone 'in the know'.

i dont need more mph, just more 60' to get into the 9s...or a cooler day. Of course I would love the mph increase if i get it from the fast intake and I do expect to get 1 mph in the 1/8....dunno about the 1/4.

The internet is full of lemmings...where one goes, others will follow.

Keep posting/lurking on here and you will find the people that truely know what they are talking about. Listen to them and it will make your hot rodding ventures much less costly and troublesome.

And the 'compliment' was not a slam towards you. It was just ironic that the same exact thing was going on in this thread, and I'm just the ******* that pointed it out.
