Default is a boost gauge necessary?

With a supercharger, do you need a boost gauge? Is it nice to have? Do you actually use it once you get the s/c setup, and figure out how much boost you are making? Is it more or less just a coolness factor?

Thanks

I have one - it's really just for show. It's dangerous to be looking over at gauges when WOT - especially when you have a M6.

Just for show? Well, I feel more confident happening to glance at the guage just to make sure everything's working right. But I'm not sure of S/C'ers. I know that I didn't want to run my car w/o indication of boost. If my WG fails one way or the other, I don't want to damage my engine.

A boost gauge is NOT for show. Monitoring boost is very important, especially with tuning and seeing how much boost you are putting out. You can potentially destory your motor if you are making too much boost and you dont know it. My boost gauge has a peak recall so I see how much boost I made, therefore I don't need to be staring at it the whole time.

If you are running a blower, you will be making lower boost when it's very hot outside, and a decent amount more when it's cold out. It is nice to know how much you are making and good to have a wideband to monitor your A/F since your boost can be ever changing.

In a turbo car, as said before, wastegates can fail and boost can spike. It is also nice to see where you hit full boost along with a bunch of other things. A boost gauge is not a "show" item...unless you don't have a blower or turbo. lol Then it's ALL SHOW!

Tuning is separate. BTW I have both a boost gague on the a-pillar as well as boost readouts and WB02 on my Blitz ABC.

Still optional IMO after the tune is dialed in.

I can tell from my boost gauge on the truck when the air filter needs replacing. Less boost=more intake restriction.

For it being so optional you sure do have enough readouts of boost.

Autometer boost guage costs what 60-70$? You just spent several grand on a supercharger, why not fail conservative?

My 2 cents. (and by the way, why doesn't the keyboard come w/ a cent sign?)

It's not a cost issue, but rather more of a "sleeper look" issue. I suppose that while actually driving on the street, a boost gauge is not really noticable, but when parked/showed....

Love the sleeper look....

Thanks

At least get a knock guage. That's more important than a boost guage. Boost doesn't say, hey, I'm about to send half the engine out the bottom of the oil pan like a bunch of yellow then red lights do Proud member of the Turbo Buick drove over the drivetrain club...

The sleeper look??? You can put a guage anywhere. I'd personally want it easily accessible. But it looks lik eyou've made up your mind. No need to rant anymore.

I'm out. Hope it doesn't blow.

This is my opinion...
The best looking sleeper location...

I put my boost and fuel pressure gauge right in front of my shifter. I cut some plastic for a separate plastic part to fit into that area and had to do some cutting around the lighter area for it to fit. Took a little work, but I am always happy when people see the gauges in that location and ask if my car came with a supercharger. It looks VERY good. It is sort of a sleeper location cause you will not really see it from outside the car unless you look for it. Send me a pm if you are interested in seeing some pics of it.

The mechanical version is cheap, my electric Phantom boost gauge was $189.

I never said that the desire for the sleeper look would trump the gauge, just wanted to discuss it... perhaps there was a sleeper friendly boost gauge setup that I don't know about. Thanks for your input, but no need to get offended if I don't think exactly like you.

i think having a boost gauge is more of a safety thing than a show thing... well maybe both, but you could always mount is somewhere that can be covered, like in the ashtray with the lid, so you can pop it open when you wanna see it, and cover it up when you want. I would definitly want to have one somewhere, to monitor my boost levels and also so i might get a hint if a problem comes up.
