Default Turbo/Supercharger Noise

If you wanted to have a quiet vehicle, would the turbo be the way to go? Or can a supercharger be just as quiet and still make big power? Plus, doesn't the supercharger whine a lot compared to the whir of a turbo?

Default noise

I have a turbo, its quiet at idle and low rpms, due to it not being in boost.its. noisier upon boost due me me not have any type of muffler.. a supercharger produces a constant whine at idle and low rpms..they do have quiet systems out there but you still hear it..

ill let someone else chime in...

if you really want to be silent, id say FI isn't for you. N20 really has zero noise...apart from purging. A turbo is silent at idle, as venom mentioned. Superchargers will vary from type to type. But at WOT anything will be loud.

What are your goals? A sleeper? Or just something the neighbors wont call the cops on?

When you say what is the quietest do you mean for putzin around, or ALL the time? Like venom said the turbos make near on zero noise till you ask for power. Then they wake up. Even some of the roots superchargers(read: not available for f-bodies) they are quiet most of the time and then make a ton of noise when ya ask for power.
For my dollar Turbo all teh way. GL

Daily driver but I want a lot of power. Seems like the turbo would be what I want. When I get on it, I expect some noise or else how will it make power. I just want it quiet most of the time.

I have a P1SC and it is quiter than most SC. When you pull up next to someone, if they have the windows up and are not paying attention they probably won't even notice. BUT for a daily driver, if you have the money, I think your best choice would be a turbo.

i think turbo is the way to go in regards to that.

i just figure at idle and normal driving conditions, a turbo engine isnt as, what's the word, EXTREME... as a nitrous hi compression big cammed motor. i'm sure there are specific examples that ARE really lopey and hard to drive, but i have a feeling that's not what we are talking about. my buddy's 9 sec notch, dailydrivable, Mustang is DEAD quiet at idle and normal cruising. it's actually kinda funny how quiet it is

i like the non existant whine at idle of a turbo..... but like others here have mentioned you can go for a big shot of nitrous and keep your stock muffler for stealthy ness.. but damn, bottle filling all the time sux.

I feel like a ricer just posting this but if my STS was actually performing on the strip, I would never keep any motor I have N/A. From a roll my car feels like a beast and I love the sound of it. People think that a jet is closing in on them at WOT. And there's no one on here I don't agree w/. For a sleeper, get the turbo.

Turbo = Quiet at idle, loud whoosh/whistle while hard on throttle

Supercharger = Loud whine at idle, whistles from idle to about 2000rpm, dead silent above that, especially ATI, much less noise with Vortech.

Sounds nice. Is that the blow-off valve I heard? You've got some major power for pump gas.

You can't lump all SC as the same. My Radix is quiet except at WOT.
