Default Blown Head Gasket

Well as I was changing the oil today I found water. So now im thinking I should lower the compression so this won't happen again. Pistons, Rods, Gaskets, Bolts... What parts should I use(dished or flat pistons etc and brand), and where can I find a good deal on these parts? I am running a procharger at 7-8psi and I might bump up the boost later if the engine can hold up. My goal is to have a reliable DD that can hold 600-650 rwhp. BTW I am running 1997 heads. Thanks for the help.

Default Gasket

What type of gaskets were you using and the heads were they the small chamber, What was your plugs gapped at, did you have studs or the bolts on top end. If your only at 7-8 psi something went wrong, been threw most of the problems myself.

I am in the same boat as you but it is not leaking like yours. I would go with a good set of piston, here is some info on that.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-induction/344982-best-forged-piston-forced-induction.html

If you have the cash I would replace the rods at the same time, and if you realy want to spend the cash go for a set of low compresion heads sence they are off any way. Which should take full use of that GT2-3, along with turning up the boost a bit, and you should meet your 600-650 DD goal, with no problem.

Oh ya you said you have 97 heads, not sure how they would be to a set of AFR 205, 225,s. My next choice

Slp gaskets. NGK iridium spark plugs. (not sure what they are gapped at.) Heads - ? dont know.

So what about connecting rods? Is there something I should be looking for, or should I just buy the least expensive forged connecting rods I can find?

After doing some research (thanks for the link 618HAWK), I have ordered diamond pistons, manley rods, and ARP head studs. I plan on getting hell fire rings. Any suggestions for gaskets or will the stock gm gaskets be ok?

Thanks for the help.

You could have save a couple hundred bucks and got SBC forged rods and ran them backwards. This is a common thing to do and sence SBC rods are cheap as hell and are just as strong as any forged ls1 rod they work great.

Other than that sounds like you are on your wat to doing it all right. I would have got the diamond rings when you ordered your pistons. You are going to have to set your ring gap. Find out how much power you want to run in the future and do some math to fugure out your ring gaps or you can just do what everyone else does and copy someone elses setup.

I have a set of really nice 6.0 heads for sale that would drop your comp to about 9.3-1 on a stock block. With your new pistons it will bring it down even more.

This is the first I've heard of this being done (yes, I live in a vacume). Will this also work with a 4" stroke?

I have had a couple of machinists tell me that this is not a good idea because the SBC rods are offset several thousandths to accommodate the bores not lining up with the crank throws. Our LS1s line up correctly so have no offsets. Since our clearances are so tight (1/1000 on each side of the piston), any offset will side-load the pistons and cause the bores to become oval-shaped and prematurely wear out the pistons and rod bearings. Not worth saving a couple hundred bucks if you ask me.
