Default surging

Since we have turbo the ls1 truck we have had surging pretty bad while cruising and not very good throttle response. I have heard people use diffrent map sensors if so what do i need and how do i do it? The throttle response is bothering me the most. You while cruising creep into it and it doesnt jump at first then slings you back. What is the deal with this if anybody can help me. I am running the stock map and the maf right before the throttle body. Thanks for any info guys

More then likely a tuning issue, but hard to guess with limited detail.

I would say tuning .On trucks you have to change the point were PE comes in at the WOT table.Trucks are setup to WOT at 90% throttle so your tipin is in closed loop which the engine tries to stay 14.7-1 A/F.

Well it is a ls1 in a 93 chevy pickup same setup though as a trans am,camaro. It does fell like it is the tune cause when i first got the truck running with the cam and heads it did similiar but a lot worse. So do i need a diffrent map or will this one be alright? I might send the computer out to get tuned what should i have done? Should i get rid of the maf and go to a diffrent map? If so what map? Thanks guys for all the help

If you are running more than 5-6lbs boost, you need a 2-bar MAP sensor. You also need an engine management system that can handle the new MAP sensor and create/modify a fuel table for it.

How are you tuning your motor?

I could be wrong, but it also sounds like you might be just trying stuff without knowing what it will do. I recommend Corky Bell's book "Maximum Boost" for those with turbos. It will answer many questions and help you know what you are doing.

Okay if i need all this crap. How come stock camaros when they buy a turbo kit you can just slap them on with a lil tune and be done on 5-6#s of boost

Maybe the kit comes with a new MAP sensor? The stock one has the range to be accurate to about 5-6lbs of boost. Above that you need a new sensor. We're only talking $40 or so from Summit.

What are you tuning with?

Nothing yet. Okay i disconnected the intake pipe for boost and the truck is still running the same maybe the new plug wires we made or the spark plugs are fouled out or the plug wires are causing a low end miss. Would this possibly be it? I know i have to get it tuned bt should run a lil better off boost.

A new set of copper Champions is always a good start. Gap at .032"-.035" for low boost.

Use a little dielectric grease inside the plug boots at the spark plug and distributor ends.

If there's still a miss, try unclipping the fuel injector connector on each cylinder, 1 AT A TIME. If you unclip one and that cylinder makes no difference in how it runs, check out that cylinder's plug wire.

Don't unplug 1 spark plug wire at a time, because you will just be sending raw gas into that cylinder the entire time the wire is off. Bad.

Good luck!

Like I said you are going about this like a crap shoot - boost is nothing to fool with without knowing what you are doing and having some way to monitor and measure it. You will end up with a lot of frustration at a minimum and a blown-up motor as a worst case.

Like they say: PDCA

Plan
Do
Check
Act

You are jumping straight to the "Do" part without a plan and with no way to check.

Sorry if this is not the quick fix you want, but it is good advice if you want this motor to last.

Not to worried about the engine since my 6.0 will be done at the end of the year. I believe my driver o2 messed while my buddy was putting it in. I also have a buddy with alot of turbo knowledge helping me. So the knowledge of turbos is there. Just needed to know a lil more about the ls1 being turbo. I had a lt1 supercharged and it wasnt nearly as hard to fool with as this is. Thanks for the help though
