Default Turbo on 422

I'm thinking about this right now. What could I do to make this sound as stock as possible. I guess not a real lopey cam and I want it very streetable. What would be the max boost I could safely run? How much hp would be lost between a big cam, whatever MTI and ARE normally put in, and something not so big that wouldn't lope much? Thanks!!

the only time you can really make it sound stock is at idle or really anytime out of boost. once they start to spool...you'll here 'em. cam choice is pretty broad since anything under a 235+ duration will/can sound pretty close to stock with a quiet exhaust. Boost is a hard question to answer since they can build a 9:1 422 just as easily as a 11:1 422. Call MTI and definately ARE (Godspeed had an ARE 385cid TT with 605rwhp @ like 6psi).

Oh yeah I wasn't talking about the boost being quiet when it's spooled up. Just the motor. Thanks!

how much horsepower do you want? a 422 with a turbo would be quite rediculous if you only looking for 600rwhp on the street, of course 600rwhp would be rediculous on the street too!

with a good flowing exhaust it's pretty "stock sounding" w/ a reasonable cam. You hardly hear mine when i'm capped. Not until i'm making boost do you hear them at all.

and you don't need that many cubes to make 600 RWHP

The big question is which turbo kit? The main reason for going cubes is for the torque advantage which is quite necessary in both NA and centrifigal applications. Depending on system design with turbos you don't necessarily need the extra cubic inches. What we recommend is finding out which block you want to go with, stock, 6.0 iron, C5R, and then looking at the geometry of components used in respect to durability. Street cars will have different setups than a short use race motor. As in the mustang crowd, the most popular upgrade from the 302 is the 347. This provides a much needed torque increase but not a durable engine when compared to say a 331. In the LS1 crowd it is very difficult to put your finger on the "best" setup 'cause alot of people seem to keep changing combos and never really gets the most out of one. LPE has a TT vette here in Orlando that has made over 700rwhp at 12-13psi with a standard aluminum block, 372 cubes, stock ls1 intake, stock fuel lines and rails, and I am pretty sure stock head bolts. It may be in for a LS6 intake, GTBB37, C5R, LS6 head upgrade shortly. Hmm, how do I get my hands on his current shortblock setup? His car sounds completely stock at idle minus the triflow catback. No noticeable cam.

Big cams are for moving more air through the engine. Not a necessity at all wiht forced induction. As a matter of fact, Nick at ARE says stick with single duration, low lift cams for FI. I was running 218/218 .528/.528 114 LSA with my 9:1 352. Car is actually a bit quieter through the turbo. I was running with no CAT and straight pipe, and it was loud, but not bad at all.

OBTW...my turbo kit is for sale in the classifieds

Reckless, I know. That's what got me thinking. If only it were for sale in February. That's when I'm beginning this big project.
