Default GWP Aeromotove Pump install/connect for SC

Q) The Aeromotive pump doesn't always run. And what activates the relay that in turn powers the pump?
A) It comes on under boost. On the end of the sending unit that detects boost from your vacuum line (I'll call it the boost sensor) that is switched on by the power from the grey wire you tie into, there is a hex nut (depressed into the end between the two terminals of the boost sensor). You can adjust that counter-clockwise, moving it outward, where boost coming down the vacuum line (which is at the other end of the boost sensor) will activate it sooner.

Q) What style relay is used with the pump? Do you run both wires off ths pump to to the relay, or one hot to the relay and just ground the pump?

A) The fuel pump Grey wire from the wiring harness splices with the Green wire going to the relay.

The Orange fused wire goes to positive power (there's a positive post right there behind the driver's side underhood fuse boxes... use that).

The Yellow wire goes to the positive post of the pump. Of course, the negative post of the pump goes to ground.

The Black wire goes to one post of the boost sensor. Connect another wire from the other terminal of the boost sensor to ground.

I know some of you are doing this right now!

And also I want to add that my relay was a little different:

Orange wire is fused and has the long red wire attached to it. That's my pump feed.

Yellow wire goes to the post by the pump (it was shorter).

Black wire goes to hobbs switch.

Grey (i have no green wire) wire goes to grey wire via a wire tap under the frontmost fues box on the FP relay.

My pump is in the well of the axle space. I fitted it above the fuel lines and used sheet metal screws to hold it in place.

At first I thought I might go back and put bolts in with rubber grommets to dampen vibration/noise, but found that I could never hear it above the noise of WOT (exhaust, motor, spinning) anyway, so I've left it alone.

I lied. <img src="gr_emb.gif" border="0">

It is AFTER the well of the chassis where the axle is.

I have it in the well space where the Filter is.

I tried to sketch a picture up real quick (man, I need a Polaroid for times like these...)

http://www.mlbuie.com/transam/Black_...and_Hookup.jpg

Hope that helps.

Imagine lying under the car with your headunder the rear end and your feet toward the front of the car when you look at this diagram. The Torque Arm is by your right side and the rear end just behind your head.

I tucked the pump between the body of the car and the lines that run parallel with the car. Disconnect the fuel line from the filter inlet (that runs from the tank) and connect the fuel line to the short hose going to the Pump Inlet. Take the longer hose from the Pump Outlet into the Filter Inlet you just disconnected.

I secured the pump to the inderside metal of the car (I guess this is in teh vacinity of the left-rear seat) with 1/2" or 3/4" sheet metal screws... I don't remember which. But, I used one long enough that I felt they would be secure, but wouldn't protrude to far.

Mike, thanks for going above and beyond. The car is running though I have yet to boost it because the stock plugs are still in. Also I need to put in the check valve.

Check out the ATI update thread. From some reason, the other site no longer has me as a registered user. I originally had typed this up for the thred over there.

Hopefully I can recover the pics from the install. If not, I'll take pics to show you what I did. Thanks for your help buddy.

Well I'm done!!! Everything looks good.

One problem. When I get into it, fuel pressure drops like a rock. So I can't even get into the boost. Also, instead of having 60psi of fuel pressure I am only getting around 56.

Any suggestions??

My pressure guage reads anywhere from 55 or 56 to around 59. It varies. If you are reading 56 at WOT youare doing fine.

If your fuel pump were not coming on, it would drop to about 20 or 30 at WOT. With the solenoid, it will drop for a split second until you are at positive boost, then kick in the current to the fuel pump.

Mine was initially set to come on around 2-PSI, but screw that! Back the little hex nut in the rear of the switch (it's between the two terminals) all the way back just before it drops out. Your fuel pump will kick in quicker, at zero boost. It only happens at WOT or near WOT (kind of like when you pass someone without quite flooring it).

Remember, too. If you want to reassure yourself th first time you hold the pedal to the metal all the way through, hot wire across the switch to make the pump run all the time for one of your outings. You will hear the pump running while cruising 'cause it's loud. Do your WOT run to whatever you reel is safe for where you are. Get a feel for where the Fuel Pressure reading is. Do it a few times so there's no doubt in your mind when you punch it later.

Then come back home and place your switch back into normal operation.

Congratulation!!!! <img src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Again... I've NEVER seen 60 PSI with this setup. The quoted number is 58. I mostly see anywhere between 56 and 58.

I'VE GOT BOOST!!!! <img src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" />

Made the adjustments to the Hobbs switch and went out this morning after the kids got done opening presents. I'm getting about 5lbs of boost at 6000rpm.

I haven't done any autotaps yet but I'm know there is work to be done. Every time I come off the gas the car backfires ALOT.

When I get it dialed in I'm sure it will go like this.... <img src="graemlins/formula.gif" border="0" alt="[Pontiac]" />
