Default Another link in the FI 422 Stroker chain

My Black 'Gal whined and moaned until I got her her own stable.

She now resides in her own crib at

Her latest addition just came in:

I will be out of the country for a week, so this is my last post for a while.

I hope to see my 422 Chinchilla soon after I return!

Gotta have SOMETHING to hold up to that monster cubed, Forced Induction power!

I've only heard the Ford 9" were the ones you could not do ABS on. You can get it on a 12-Bolt. The specifically asked me if my car had ABS or Traction Control.

I have ABS but not TCS.

Great! Looks this is the way I am going to go with a rear end.

My buddy, Bryon and I tried to swap out the 12-Bolt.

I have been writing down the major steps and took some pictures of some tricky installation points (tricky to a novice like me, anyway).

First issue we noticed right away, this rear uses larger 1/2-20 lug nuts, so I had to run to Autozone for those. It IS a heavy-duty rear, so I guess that's a good thing. I gotta figure out what I can do about the two lock nuts.

It took us 2.5 hours to get the rearend out last night. We took a break (I had gotten in from Hawai'i that afternoon... a 12-hour flight, not counting layovers).

This morning we removed the brakes and realized in order to put the emergency brakes onto the new rear would require taking the axles out.

Well, Bryon commented that performance rears often do not require c-clips to hold the axles in. We checked and found this was the case with this rear, so we didn't have to crack the cover. We removed the piece that secures the first axle and tapped the axle out a tad.

Issue 1: When we pulled the axle out, we now saw that the axle bearing will have to be pressed off, pull off the piece that holds the axle on (also, the caliper bolts to this piece, too), drop the Emergency Brake plate onto the axle, the piece I just described, and have them press the axle bearing back on.

We went ahead and hooked up the rearend, minus the axles and brake assembly.

Issue 2:

The last thing... after putting the panhard bar back on, I grabbed the sway bar to re-install. Well, guess what? The clamping hardware is too small for the larger diameter 12-bolt housing. Well, duh! :sillyme:

Whine Points:
:baby: It would be nice if you could order the rearend with the new lug nuts, an emergency brake kit installed and the larger brackets for the sway bar.

What I have remaing is the axle issue I just described, figure out if I want to get a better/different sway bar or find brackets to fit the existing one, and...

Issue 3: I have to grind about 1/4" off the corner of ONE spot on my Random Technologies Adjustible Torque Arm... it just did refuse to line up over the bolt holes. The stock Torque Arm would have. I like it that Mark Williams made four shorter bolts to secure the ATA instead of the two long stock bolts.

If they could give me my whiney issues, I'd rate it an A+++.

------------

Even my buddy commented that (he's a welder/mechanic):

1. Their product demonstrates Outstanding Craftsmanship!

2. Welds are SUPERIOR on all brackets!

3. Perfect fitment!

4. Obviously STOUT housing!

I'll post my instructions and pictures when I get the other work done and the brakes hooked back up.

I went by a mechanic shop I use for my other vehicles ('cause I don't like hurting my poor knuckles anymore) and had them turn the rotors on the rear of my Black Gal and put some new brake shoes on.

They begged me to get on it as I left. I hate doing that on the street because of cops and the enormous amount of power the car has now, but I could tell they wanted it pretty badly. Some girls were watching, too.

I've broken in the rearend, now, so I said to my self, "What the heck!"

I waited until there were no cars coming from either direction, rolled out into the street and just rolled into about 80% throttle. Tire smoke was everywhere (like a burnout) and rising in the air like the back end of a drag-strip. Instead of the sideways slipping I ALWAYS have to compensate for, I just had to hold the wheel straight and true. Then it shifted to 3rd (yes, with my street tires I'd barely moved 50 feet thru 1st and 2nd) and the rear end tried to fish-tail, but I immediately compensated and it smoked some more before it hooked up.

Man! It had been a while since I'd done that!

I couldn't see their expressions because there was so much smoke! I'm glad I waited until no cars were coming because visibility would have been nil. I can be such a bad boy.

Of course, My Mark Williams rear was still quiet as a mouse. I LOVE a 12-bolt! I know I haven't even raced it yet, but my last two 10-bolt rears started making whining noises with my first burnout since the Procharger, and got progressively louder. My Mark Williams rearend is as quiet as the day I bought the car!
