Default Turbo Oil System?

Does anyone make or in the process of making a independant oil system for LS1Motorsports' or TurboTech's turbo kits? This could work with Vortech too. I don't want my engine sharing oil with the turbo.

Why not?

Run a decent synthetic for the higher temp capabilities or an oil cooler or both.

Getting a reliable high presure oil pump to supply the turbo(s) is an issue IMO when you consider the engine oil pump is already there.

loose oil supply to the turbo and it won't take long to loose the turbo if it's in excess of 100,000 RPM under boost.

your better off keeping a common system and changing your oil on time

OEM turbo systems are common oiling and they are built on 80k+ mile durability.

I just wanted to keep from drilling and tapping the engine block for the oil system. I was tossed between the self-contained oil system of the Procharger and the quicker spoolup of a T-76 turbo. The cost difference is about $900, so for that amount of money I could buy or manufacture an independant oil system. I know that Lingenfelter made one for his 7.0L Twin Turbo C5.

drill the oil pan...scariest part of my t-76 install but it was damn sure the easiest part. I'm gonna redo mine...turbotech has you drill into the bottom of the pan...i'm going to redrill into the side of the pan like the vortech does for better drain.

You dont need to drill and tap the pan for the oil return if you use a pump. You can remove the oil level sensor and pump the oil back in through there. Just add a check valve to prevent drain back and your done. That is how my oil system is setup.

Lingefelter (for his standard TT setups) was using the stock pump for supply to the turbos and a razor scavenge pump to pump the oil back into the pan. Y2KHawk is also using a razor pump just slightly different configuration.

There are two options to avoid drilling and tapping.
1. As described above (through the oil level sender)
2. You could pull your rocker arm cover off and have a bung welded on to it. Then run a line from the scavange to the cover.

The bad thing about option 2 is it tends to leave some oil up at the top of the motor. Although if you get your pressure's right from the supply side you shouldn't have too many problems with it.

Personally I'm looking for a solution that raises the Turbos above the oil pan full line so it can gravity drain.

I haven't decided on TurboTech's or LS1Motorsport. I have also been debating on the ATI SC Kit. I never got a cost on the tuner kit with T-76 from LS1Motorsport.

instead of drilling and tapping the pan, just drill a small hole and install a bulkhead into the pan. requires removal of the pan, but a better way imo

Found one!!! Granatelli Motorsports makes an oil system for supercharger or turbos that normally use the engine's oil. It's $1200, hold 5 quarts of oil, electric pump, oil cooler, and a low pressure warning system. To me that is worth the money. They even say that after the break in of 3000 miles, you can go 40K miles before changing the oil again. And to take it a step further, you can put a timer on the electric pump to keep circulating oil to help cool the bearings and prevent coking up the lines. Cool is it.

With the Granatelli Motorsports system will only work if you have a gravity drain from the turbos down to the tank. That should work for some (turbo tech and ls1 motorsports), but kinda expensive since there is only about $300 worth of parts. But then again you could just find who makes the system for them and get it for half price.

Why a gravity drain? With the electric pump you can run the pump to cool the turbo. Most systems need the drain to prevent oil lines from coking up. On top of that, you don't have to worry about no oil in the turbo on a cold start.

It only has one pump you would need two pump in order to not gravity drain. Looking at that system the catch tank has to below the turbo. The pump just pushes oil through the cooler and into the turbo. Once oil goes through the turbo is no longer pressurized so it has be pump or drains down.
