Default New turbo tech owner needs advice... (long)

OK, I just bought a Turbo tech single turbo kit from a freind of mine. Its been upgraded to a T-66 turbo with some other upgraded components.

I am only looking for about 425 RWHP, I think that's pretty attainable with the stock fuel system and good gas. Its my driver so reliability is key, I don't want to be breaking things all the time, hence my relatively low RWHP goal. I also realize that it is forced induction and broken parts are going to happen, but I would like to minimize the down time as much as possible.

Another buddy of mine ports heads at a local performance shop. Needless to say I could get a killer deal if I chose to have him port the heads. However, pulling the heads is a major PITA and I don't want to do it if I don't have to. Infact, I will ONLY do it if it will substantially increase the life of my motor.

What do you guys think? Would 425 RWHP with the turbo tech kit and the factory heads be more wear inducing than 425 RWHP with the turbo tech kit and ported heads?

If there is a difference is it significant? If all I stand to gain by porting the heads is another 3,000 miles before I poop out a bearing or something, then I probably wouldn't have the heads done. However if I can pick up 23,000 miles, then it would obviously be worth it.

So what do you guys think?

Thanks.

Welcome fellow TurboTech owner.
your the first one Ive heard with a T-66 turbo

I think that if you would port your heads, the engine would become more effient. Dont think you'll really need it to make your 425 rwhp goal. I think the key to makeing your engine last is the tune, and is directly perportional to your right foot and your resistance to turning up the boost. Porting your heads would allow you to run less boost for the same amount of HP, but i dont think it wil make the engine last that much longer.
You could always wait till you think you need it or not.
another thing you can consider is porting some 6.0 heads. these will lower the CR and they flow great. I have these on my set up, they work great!
Lowering the cr is your best bet on keeping your motor together longer.

MIne is a daily driver which i drive about 80-90miles a day.

Right on, thanks for the info. I thought that 6.0 heads lowering the compression was a rumor. I thought I read somewhere that there was only about 1cc of difference between them and a set of 5.7 heads?

If I can drop the compression with a set of 6.0 heads, that would definitely be the way to go.

OK, I'm gonna wait until my Xmas break from work to install the kit so I've got some time before I need to decide what I am going to do. Anyone else???

The 6.0 heads will drop the CR to about 9.7:1 since they are only about 2-4cc's larger then the 5.7's. Some have used a thicker gasket combined with the heads to drop it further. But if you go to thick on the gasket you MIGHT have to worry about quench height.

But you should be able to reiably obtain your goals with 6psi reliably with out changing anything. Just make sure you fill up with the highest octane they have at the pump.

Do me a favor and sign in on this thread. Im trying to find most ofthe TurboTech users or list them.

Read the post on ls1.com, it got long with winded opinions.
had some good points, but id just get the kit installed and if you think you need more power get your heads ported or better yet get the 6.0 heads ported.

Hey i saw you got some of your exhaust jet coated, did you get your Downpipe coated. If you want one coated, i have my old 2.5" ceramic coated, im trying to get ride of it. Ill let it go cheap, cheaper then you can get yours coated. I moved up to a 3" and had that coated.
Just have to make sure the T66 flange is the same as my T76 flange.

As far as the 6.0 heads:

I know TEA now has a FI 6.0 head avail. I understand they remove (CNC) some material from the chambers. This combined with the heads already low CR, gives something in the range of about 9 to 1 CR. Perfect for FI.

So, with these heads, you not only get TEAs great porting & flow results, you also get the CR you really need to take advantage of increased boost combined with pump gas. In my opinion, it's a win-win deal.

No thanks on the down pipe, mine is all ready coated.

I really can't afford to buy the heads from TEA. the only reason I could swing the turbo kit is because it was a killer deal. I still don't know if I am going to have the $$$ to swing all the BS that goes along with owning a FI car. Thanks for the heads up though.

How much for those TEA heads? I have never heard of them, are they reputable? How much can you lower comp with head gaskets before proble, as far as motor geometry and drivability?

I was just told that 400rwhp is pushing it with stock fuel system on an NA motor. and on a turbo car it takes more fuel to make the same hp so be careful.
