Default Turbo oiling?

If you mount the turbo/s up high how do you get the oil to them? Auxillary pump or tap into the pressure side of the stock oil system?

Don't all the LS1 kits mount the turbo low so you have to use an auxillary pump to get the oil out of the turbo?

I was just wondering because if I make a kit for my truck I want to mount two 60-1's on turbo logs but, I want them up top where they can be seen. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I guess the oil would then just drain back but, to where? Where do you tap the drain in?

Any "Turbos for dummies" books for someone looking to design there own setup? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Thanks

John

John,

The oiling side is fed by the pressurized oil system. So there is no problem mounting them up high.

If the turbos are mounted above the pan then they can gravity drain back into the pan. Just tap the pan at any point higher then the oil level and you should be fine for it draining back in.

Only time you need a scavenge pump is when they are mounted below the pan and the oil needs a little 'help' getting back in there.

Thanks Scott

How do the various turbo kits tap into the oiling system?

That would make it much easier to buy the tapping parts and then just run the lines. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

To tell you the truth, I forget what the piece looks like for the Incon kit, but it goes up by the oil filter and bolts on...then there is a one-way check valve that Ts into the two turbos.

I think that the piece comes from the Vettes if I remember correctly.

Here's the setup from the kit installed on mine.

By the way this is not an Incon kit since as you can see it's gravity fed.

Turbos are above the oil pan.

See the piece that is in between the oil filter and the end of the 90* fitting that is tapped into the pan? That is where the piece from the incon kit bolts on.

The stock piece comes off and the Incon piece bolts on.

That picture is great. So the piece from the Incon kit is off a vette? That means it's probably high dollar. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Chasgiv3 - If that's not part of the Incon kit what is it from? Is the piece you're using different from the Incon piece?

So the oiling problem is not really a problem at all it seems. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Ok, so the list is two turbos, two manifolds, one BIG intercooler, two wastegates(that's my next question <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> , one BIG blowoff valve, oil tap parts, assorted tubing/lines/pipe and wala. TURBO POWER <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Oh yeah, and a money tree. <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />

Thanks fellas. You've been a big help.

Granatelli Motorsports makes an independant oil system for s/c or turbo that use an outside source of oil like you engine. You can order it through Summit Racing for about $770. It contains a small tank, electric oil pump, stainless steel filter, oil cooler, plumbing, and a warning system for low pressure. According to the instructions, you can install it run for about 3000 miles to change the oil and your next change it about 40,000 miles. I am getting it for when I install my T-76.

XLR8NSS, I have no idea what the Incon kit uses for that. But the price for that piece is about $15.00 at a dealer that'll give you a price break. We have one local in the Chicago area.

smokinHawk, yes it's the prototype kit from Charged Air systems. Which is on my 99 WS6.

You can also just drill a hole in the stock piece, but the incon piece is not from a vette. Its diffently not factory does not have the factory fit and finish. If your turbo are lower than the pan. You can also run the oil back into pan through the port were the oil level sensor is located. Since you would have to use a pump just add a check valve. This is how I have my Incon kit setup. I noticed the charge air setup has gravity drain interesting, bet if I look I could convert the Incon to gravity with no problems.
