Default How do you guys do it.....

How are you guys able to run forced induction on our cars when they come from the factory with a high compression ratio? I always thought that you need very low compression like 7:5:1 or at most 9:1 ratio to prevent the motor from tearing itself apart.

Most LS1s are really well built engines from the factory. I ordered a 8psi kit and they sent me a 12psi pulley. I ran it for a year with no problems until I turned it down. Before that I ran a 150 shot of N20 for a year. A lot of people dont get too lucky when they try more than 9psi though so I wouldnt recommend it. Most forced induction guys will tell you its all in the tune. I'd like to drop my compression a bit for safety but I guess I'll just stick with the 10.1:1 until I bore and stroke my 6.0 block. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I blew a head gasket w/10.5:1 compression...

Now I'm about a point lower, so far so good...

depends on your setup. if you run as low of a cr like the 7.5:1 like you are talking about, not only will you have squat for low end power, you may even have problems with the rings sealing properly. leave cr's like that to the real big boys with LOTS of boost/nos. even then, i don't think they run much below 8.5:1 or so. if i am doing it correctly, a 9.5:1 motor with about 7# of boost will have an effective cr of about 14.0:1 give or take.

What is the formula for calculating effective compression ratio?

It's called INTERCOOLING...

High compression will detonate without it, although some people have gotten the non intercooled powerdyne to work, they do not add nearly as much power as the intercooled ATI or Vortech kits do.

The high inlet charge temps are what really kill the forced induction engines. Once your inlet temps go up as they do with compression you will detonate and blow the engine. Of course the added octane count must be there as well.
