Default new sts turbo kit

I have just recently purchased a brand new sts kit with the 255 walbro fuel pump and dual stage boost controller upgrade. I am wondering if there are any tricks to installation or things I need to watch out for / alter in order to prevent problems /damage with running 5psi. I will be putting this kit on a 2002 trans am ws6 with hooker long tube 1 3/4' headers, O/R y-pipe. I have dynoed 353rwhp and 360 ft lbs tq. as it sits, What do you guys think it will do with the new kit at 5psi???? Also, is their anything that is not included in the kit besides NGK tr6 plugs that I am going to need before installing. I have done some reading on everyone elses progression but didn't read anyone that had an identical/similar set-up....any help would be greatly appreciated.....

You'll need some injectors. I dont know if the long tubes are going to hurt you or not....maybe someone else can chime in. What wastegate spring do they ship the STS kit w/?

5PSI you'll probably be around 420rwhp.

(btw you should hear my turbo spool up.....I had it out at Jerseys' saturday)

I would go at least 8 #'s , with a good tune you will be plenty safe . Get some 42 - 60 # injectors and go have some fun !!!

Don't forget valve springs... and while you're under the covers for the springs, now would be a good time to swap out those stock pushrods for something a bit more rigid...

For injector sizing check out this link.

http://www.rceng.com/technical.htm#WORKSHEET

Figure 85% duty cycle and .6 BSFC. If the 353 dyno is your baseline, you should be comfortably above 450 whp on 5 psi. So figure about 550 crank hp that the new injectors will have to feed.

918 springs and hardened pushrods are a good idea! So is meth injection or IC for anything above 5 psi. HTH

^ really....even just running 5-6 lbs......what brand injector would you guys suggest, I havent really looked into any brands other then excel and my cost on those are like 47 a piece.....is it ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to run springs and pushrods right now at 5psi or can it be held off until the turbo cam is installed???again guys....thanks for the info!!!!

BTW .....KEV, I wish I could have been there to see the beast.....how is your new set up working out for you......and how does it feel power wise????

I forgot about valve springs and push rods. I am running 42# SVO's, but I plan to max those out with 8-10lbs....but I will be spraying meth on top of them.

I havent gone over 3k rpms. I am still running the procharger tune, as soon as work cools down it will be tuned.

Sure you can run the stock stuff, but you a little above stock right now. Right? I tend to build for reliability (read, some cushion) when upgrading a setup. I guess that's what's in my mind (I'm an old fart - haha). The pushrods and springs are not outrageously expensive and some of the guys have experienced some valve float above 5000-5500 rpm, so that's sort of an insurance thing. Just remember, you are opening the valves against 35% greater pressure (5 psi) when you're into boost. Your call. GL

42# I would say are a must! Really you need injectors more then you would need a fuel pump. Other then that 5 psi you really don’t need anything else! If you want to be pushing 8psi or higher I would say get methanol. We are pushing 432rwhp on 5 psi and pushing 508rwhp/548rwt on about 8.5 psi with a GT 67 on a 02 WS6 TA. Where you located?

^I am in NC near the coast (Wilmington).....I got the fuel pump as a "gift" which I figured would come in handy later down the road....I am sure 5 psi will get old soon and I will have to run meth so to safely run 7-8psi....but that will have to wait until I get the 12-bolt rear.......not to mention clutch and master.....I 'll post as things progress...again, thanks a ton fella's!

Yeah I second the injectors I was running SVO #42 at 5 PSI, Then went to 60s went I got past 8 PSI. The stock springs and push rods worked fine for me, I changed my cam and heads so I needed new springs and push rods if I hadnt done that I would still be running them. I would say get the injectors and try to find a good deal on a meth kit. I see you have the M6 be sure you got the kit with the BOV

The way i did mine was cam, springs, pushrods, entercooler, fuel injectors 42#,Tune. I had a little problem with my maf it was going in and out but all in all it was good I highly reccomend a tune even with running 5 psi dont short cut on this my boy Tru speed did and was not happy with the results because he took short cuts and cost him some valvetrain damage and transmission damage if anything Do the spring and pushrods and tuning and injectors my 0.02$

Idzine i would def go with 42lbs injectors. i used the bosch green tops. also the fuel pump i went with the racetronix fuel pump, acts just like the stock pump, unlike the walbros that you have to modify the fuel bucket. i run 5psi on the street and 8psi w/ methanol at the track. @5psi i was pushing 425rwhp and 448tq. so you might push a little more hp with a good tune. also the other stuff like valve springs and push rods are a good idea but i havent done them yet and i have about 7k miles on the turbo and no problems yet. i drive the car hard now then i did before. alot more fun to drive. you may alos want to look in to an intercooler. i am going to be custom fabing one in a months. good look and post the numbers when you get it dynoed

well, from what I have researched, the long tubes and o/r Y-pipe should allow for a better boosting turbo set up since it emits exhaust faster and more efficient than a stock set up. I am at 350 rwhp as the car sits so I am really hoping for about a 90-110hp gain from the turbo kit @5psi.....anyone got a sts kit w/ longtube headers/off road Y-pipe and what were your numbers like????I will be COMPLETELY satisifed if my car exceeds the 450rwhp mark ......?????guess we'll just have to see.......

Default dont get your hopes up too high!

my numbers werent so great and you can see my mods I had done

im still using the stock 98 heads and im gettin right around

370 hp 385trq on the dyno at 5 psi.. one slight problem im having is the lack

of 93 octane out here ! my car was tuned on 91.

I didnt dyno my car at it stock level but I heard a 98 a4 puts out around

280hp so i think i gained 80-90 hp through my 3500 stall. I have 60k on the

odometer now
