Default Work in progress... 56k users beware!

Welp finally got the motor out...here are some pics.

Really wasn't hard at all.... Now that I've dropped the motor I can't see it taking more than 4 hours if you have the proper tools and plan everything out.

The only thing that caught me off guard was the damn battery cables that got snagged. Out of the bottom is the ONLY way to go. Soooo easy.

As you can see in that picture the tranny is just covered in gunk from the old intake leak. Anyone know a good way of cleaning it? I was planning on soaking the tranny with degreaser and using a pressure washer to hose everything off.

I didn't have access to a trunk so I decided on some ingenuity...

Then I realized it was tooo freaking big and probably not too safe to have hanging out of the truck  Soo........

I used a blanket and a boogie board to keep the engine from denting and scratching everything.

I also had to use a smaller jack to get the cherry picker legs to slide underneath the car, after slowly releasing the jack down and one swift kick it landed into the passenger side of the car. Its also obvious that I had to remove te passenger side seat to get it to fit.

The engine was soo heavy that it actually stressed the frame of the car, the paint on pillar between the front door and back door cracked all over the place.

When I got to the shop the guy didn't believe me when I told him I have a long block in the passenger side of the car. He kinda just scratched his head and asked 3 of his employees to tackle the job of removing the engine. 3 employees, 2 chains, and 1 fork lift later the engine came out of the car.

Engine guy said that it'll take roughly 2 weeks to get the long block back however there is a bunch of minor custom stuff thats needed for the engine since its going to be a blown stroker motor.

I still need to iron out the fuel system and the cam.

So far I gathered:

*Racetronix single fuel pump & harness
*83lbs Siemens injectors
*MSD boost-a-pump
*Aeromotive APFR

I believe that setup "might" be enough for a blown 383 pushing 15+ psi... however its seems that I may have to step up to a dual in tank setup. If thats the case I may have the Racetronix kit up for sale.

I'll keep you guys updated.

-B

P.S. I plan on using a truck to pick up the rebuilt engine.

P.P.S - Special thanks goes out to Nick Steel, Brian Blitz, Jared (for lending me the hoist), and Mike Leaf for support and advice.

That really is funny!

You are a nut with the motor in the passengers seat like that.... hands down the funiest thing I think I've seen in a long time

Should be a mean setup though when you are done. Not sure about the fuel pump setup.. you may want to put that racetronix up for sale before you even try it. 83 lb inj. is a BIG injector, and is gonna need alot of pump I'd think.. probably at least 400 gpm of fuel flow to keep the pressure up in higher rpm's. You're probably looking at dual pumps... I'd rather do that and be safe, then take a chance with a new motor.

I once carried my old Dodge FWD tranny in the backseat of a friends Civic, but you got me beat by a mile. You need to take pictures of those stress cracks in the paint. That's hilarious.

Wow, and I thought I had seen it all. Never seen an engine riding shotgun!

Back in college the neighbor to the house we rented had an engine pulling chain hanging from a huge tree and used to pull motors and service cars in his driveway. Saw a lot of weird things there, but never carrying an engine inside a car.

Sounds like you will have a nice monster once it's all complete. Good luck.

I bet you blew the engine guy's mind when he saw the motor sitting there.
So, if it will fit sideways in the front seat, I wonder about under the hood....

How did you lift the car up?

From the pics I can't figure out how you did it.

You know I was wondering the same thing. The only thing I can think of is one of those in-ground center piston lifts the dealerships use. But that is clearly a home garage and I have never seen an inground lift in a home garage. (although it would be beyond pimp!) At first I thought it was two different garages cause in the first pic the garage door makes the roof look a lot shorter than it does in the second pic. but if you look at the background it's definitely the same garage.

I'm curious too how you got the Camaro that high in the air? It's like magic, yo!

BTW: Brake cleaner would probably work well on cleaning that tranny up.

looks like he used the engine hoist to lift the car up with the tow strap. Then if you look in the 2nd pic on the driver side he put a bunch of wood and a jack stand on top of that to hold it, and on the passenger a jack with a 2x4 to hold it up.

Crap I see it now. The jackstand on the pile of wood is bad enough. But a 2X4 lenthwise on a 3 ton hydraulic jack. That's crazy! But no more crazy than an LT1 riding shotgun, I suppose.
