Default Finally got the STS tuned in!!!

After many months of reinstalling, and fixing screw-ups the first installer made, we finally got the car running pretty damn good.
Stock bottem end, straight TR224, put down 469/431 on a Mustang Dyno through a TH-400 @ 8lbs. REAL NICE torque curve too! It was pushing through the junk convertor a bit up top, and I think I could see another 20rwhp with a true turbo-cam. All-in-all, I am pretty happy with those numbers considering no real work has been done to increase airflow (i.e.; no headwork on stock 5.7's) Made a 1/4 mile pull on the dyno too!

60-ft: 1.78@38.08
330': 4.76@82.09
1/8th: 7.15@103.91
1000': 9.22@118.66
1/4: 10.98@129.03

I'm really happy with the MPH. Mid 10-sec mph. The 60-ft leaves something to be desired, although that 60-ft works great on the street. Minimal wheel spin. The car doesn't make any boost until around 5800 in 1st (makes about 2-3 lbs). As soon as I go to second, it jumps to 8 and stays there and DAMN does it pull. It really is one hell of a street setup. I do see a forged 8.5:1 370 iron-block in my future though I don't see the stock bottom end living very long.

Great numbers! If your engine is tuned fat, in the range of 11.2 to 11.5/1 at wide open throttle, it should survive. Bob

Take Bobs advice... keep her Fat.

Those numbers dont jive for real to me... (The est 1/4 mile). I dont think you will see 10's with those #'s. Good luck though... I hope that you do!

How accurate are 1/4 mile runs on a dyno? I thought it took 600+rwhp to get in the 10s.

That power through a T400 should get you in the tens. Good job

I've got her running a little more lean than that. In the range of 11.6-11.8. Keep in mind I drive the car on Fri, Sat nights only, and might crack into it just a couple times. I typically don't make any full 1/4mile passes on the street.

We dynoed 3 cars that run VERY consistent numbers, and the dyno seemed to be about 1/10th slow. The 60-ft seemed to be where it was a bit slower because of not really being able to dead-hook, or footbrake the car really hard. It may take 600+ for a 6 speed car, but not for us Turbo 400 boys.

Thanks man, its been months of us trying to get the mistakes, and kinks worked out. The next few things I will be doing is a new tighter convertor, probably ATI, a good turbo cam, and getting rid of my STOCK suspension. I see no reason why I can't shave 3 tenths with just some suspension upgrades.

Do you have a stall convertor? Would preloading build boost quicker?

Yes, but it should be a little tighter I think. On the street/track, I can usually stall it to around 3000 and build about a pound. Couldn't take it near that high on the dyno with out spinning the roller.

why so little boost in 1st? not enough load from the dyno, or is that how you have it tuned with a boost controller? what boost controller are you using?

The car used to be an M6, went with a 4L60 (which lasted a week with the turbo), then the TH-400. Kept the .42's in the rear. We actually put a 6-speed console back in the car and made an adapter for the 6 speed **** to fit the auto stick! Oh yeah, trans temp gauge in the ashtray. Pretty pimp ****, I'll post pics.

I guess because its not enough of a load to really spool the turbo up in 1st. As soon as the car goes to second the boost shoots up instantly and the car is gone! Like I said, it pulls like a freight train in 2nd and 3rd. And like I said before also, it works VERY WELL on the street. I can deadhook if the tires are hot (MT DR's). And by the 1-2 shift, it's usually game over

I have 3.5's and I think it's too much gear, i'm going to swap to 2.70's. It will definately make it a much nicer car to drive around with the th400. Overdrive is way overrated.

It feels ok in 1st, pretty good in 2nd, but 3rd is like holy ****. It feels like grabbing a 100 shot when I click into 3rd. I am able to make 11psi in all gears too.

How many pounds, or horsepower can you run on a stock bottom end? I've heard 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, etc. My guess is that I am on borrowed time running 8lbs, and roughly 600 crank hp. Would a 50/50 mix of meth and water help the bottom end live any? I have to get a good converter in there or I'm going to end up losing the motor and trans. I may go ahead and do a turbo cam while I'm at it. So, I will be looking at an easy 500rwhp real soon. The converter will just make more efficient use of the power already being made by the motor, but will the hp increase by swapping cams hurt it anymore or would it help to bleed off some pressure by running what it should be running?

depends how well tuned it is, cylinder pressures can go nuts very easily with a turbo, so unless you know what to do with AFR/timing you can hose it really easy. care to share your tune? i've been working on a slightly smaller STS system myself lately, so i'd love to discuss some finer points.

You would have to talk to my tuner. He is, by far, the best tuner in the Baltimore area. I may get him to email me the file. We'll see. He may not want to share
