Default Muffler for high hp (>800 rwhp)

I currently am running a 3.5" Aerochamber muffler on my T-76GTS turbocharged 363 cid LT1. I had the boost set at 12 psi, but when I remove the cat-back, the boost goes to 20 psi. To me, this indicates my muffler is far too restrictive.

We've had very good luck with the Aerochamber mufflers in the past. My old T-trim combo made 545 rwhp with a 3" Aerochamber and only gained 5 rwhp when I removed it. I'm dissappointed in the results with the 3.5" Aerochamber.

What type of muffler is everyone using that is making ~1000 fwhp?

Thanks,
Mike

Which Mufflex? They only offer BlowMaster and SpinTech. I've seen gains up to 40 rwhp just by removing a 4" SpinTech OR 4" Flowmaster from 350 - 450 rwhp naturally aspirated engines. Something tells me this would only be worse as the power goes up.

Alot of people (including myself) buy the Mufflex piping, then replace the muffler with a better one.

Don't use any chambered mufflers. For high hp turbo applications I'd suggest you only use a straight through "bullet" type mufflers. If you have room, the Borla XR1's are great mufflers that don't rob much power. The down side to straight through mufflers, as you might guess, is they don't kill much sound (a few db if you're lucky).

Tweaked Corsa with an electric cutout. Opening the cutout is good for 3psi.

Im running 2 - dynomax 12" bullets that somewhat act as cats for me and then X pipe it then out the rear with 2 - Flo Pro Twisters...It was the best I could do to take away the rasp of having no cats and it created a nice muscle car sound too. Plus I dont see where Im loosing much flow/hp do to the fact the bullets are striaght through and the twister have a striaght through pipe and nothing else to restrict flow through other than the spins around the stiaght pipe...Just throwing this option out there!

40 rwhp gain by removing the muffler on a car that makes that power? I can't imagine by removing my muffer that my car would pick at least 40 rwhp. Maybe I'll try it for fun the next time my car goes on the dyno.

Dynatec split flow oval. I like it a bunch, 4" core N/A here, no power loss.

Mike,

I am at the same point right now trying to finish my exhaust and decide on mufflers.. similar setup.. so far I have tried out the 3" dynomax as a quick solution.. I run dual 3" pipes right off my downpipe so a little different, but they didn't seem to rob much power or hurt my spool over straight pipes.. they are straight through design with perforated3" pipe surrounded by a metal mesh packing.. it takes the edge off the exhaust note very nicely.. still sounds mean, but without the tinny rasp of plain pipes. I plan on going with a pair of 3.5" XR-1 borlas in the near future to see if there is any difference, and will be glad to let ya know what I find out. I am also restricted to about 22"s of 3" downpipe before I expand to 3.5" (about 25"s then split to 3" pipes right behind the tranny body.. (96 C4 vette) I am also going to tie in the wastegate so I am not sure if that will take away anything powerwise or if it will be very noticeable.. if it is I suppose I will go to 4" pipe aftert he 3" DP then to dual 3.5" pipes and 4" XR-1 Borlas.. can't bring myself to loose the heater core box for a larger DP at this point.. maybe down the road I will pull it out and build a custom box that gives me the 1.5"s I need for a 4" DP.

your piping only needs to be as big as the downpipe I think. you could step up to a larger size if the muffler is not a straight through style.

i run 3.5" to the 3.5" cutout and then down to 3" through the stock slp cat back. i made 852rwhp through the stock slp muffler.
