Default pvc question

i have a 99 camaro ss...and i will be putting a turbo kit on it in the next few weeks, what are some of the best recomendations for what do to with the pcv system. from what i have read and gathered about it, my best be would be just to remove it and run the lines from the valve covers into a catch can, and plug the lines comming off the intake....is this a good way to do it? and what else would i have to buy, besides a catch can with breather, and some new lines to run to the catch can?

i have seen some pics but more would help as i am a very visual person, someone help me figure this out, because i think it is the only part of the turbo install i am "stuck" on.

I thought you were asking about plumbing. There are pretty much two camps on this issue, the guys that vent only and the ones that keep an operational PCV system. Some also run the vent from the catch can near the blower or turbo inlet so the will get additional pressure relief from the vacuum that would be created when you were getting into it. FWIW I like to keep the PCV because it is beneficial to oil life and it contains the smell from the blowby gases.

every1 here has it different...

driver valve cover = small breather
passenger rear valve cover plug = small breather
passenger front valve cover plug to catch can to inlet port air filter
ls6 pvc to manifold
capped off TB

My setup with good results:

New style valley cover plumbed w/pcv valve to behind TB port.
Front of pass vc plumbed to front of TB port.
Rear vc vents plugged.

A buddy of mine has a catch can w/lines from both valve covers running to it and pcv system completely removed/plugged. He has oil consumption problems now and intermittent smoking.

I personally would not recommend removing the pcv system (especially on street cars) since it has an obvious purpose that cannot be replaced by valve cover vents alone. JMO though...

I have driver side rear to catch can.
Passenger with breather and stock pcv to intake and the other side of the intake capped. Works great so far

I'm doing this same thing right now. Basically my plan is to to cap off TB. I have a passenger side breather. Run the passenger side valve cover to a catch can and then from catch can to the vacume side of the turbo. Now I just have to find a catch can, I was thinking about the AMW or Allstar Performance ones, problem is AMW or whatever is 160 bucks! And the Allstar is for metal lines not rubber hoses.

Check this thread . A few posts down there is a catch can you can make/buy at home depot for 25$ or so.

so basically all i have to do is, pull the line off the tb and run it to a catch can and than plug the line off the tb?

or can i take all the lines comming off the valve covers and run them into a catch can with a breather on it and than cap the ones comming off the tb?

i guess i am just totally lost on this one and i need to take a look at my car and figure it out....

here is what i got out of this so far, the pcv system is used to help with pressure in the crank case, the only prob is that oil will come out as well, so as long as i vent both valve covers i should be ok...correct? and as long as i seal off all the holes in the intake track to prevent vac leaks i should be ok there correct?...so in theory i should be able to remove the entire stock tubes and run my own tubes to a vented catch can, and than block off all open lines?

am i getting somewhere here?

I'm not sure if you have to do it to both valve covers, I was only planning on running one until I got enough $ to buy aftermarket valve covers.

ok i think i got it, so basically for a turbo application all i need to do is add a catch can b4 the pcv system dumps into the intake correct?

its not a matter of blowing boost back into the pcv system its more just making sure you get all the oil out of the intake because that is bad...am i on the right track here guys?

easiest is to remove all of the pcv stuff and install breathers, bonus if you can run a second line to between air filter and turbo/supercharger to pull vaccum under high airflow.

main thing is to allow a good path out for crankcase pressure

now i have switched to pulling vaccum on the crankcase via the intake, and still maintaining zero or negative pressure in the crankcase under boost. more complicated system but ive about got it how i want it

i use one of those small home depot water separators to keep oil out of the intake. its mounted in front of the brake booster behind the shock tower.. not even visible.

Ok, few questions.

1. I'm not sure I follow the idea of running a line from the valve cover to the turbo inlet. How exactly does that pull a vacuum? I have a line running from my turbo compressor housing directly to my wastegate for a boost reference. So how would that line see boost and the VC line see vacuum?

2. I understand the original PCV system of running a line from the VC to the intake but I took mine off so I wouldn't be pushing air into the head under boost. I would have to put a checkvalve in line to retain the vacuum at idle but that would still leave me high and dry under boost.

3. The whole point of pulling air out of the cylinder is for better seating of the piston rings right? Is this why you see blowby and oil consumption on turbo cars like the one mentioned above in this thread?

Sorry, forgot to add that you would have to add a port and filter... still cheap and would work great though, for nicely welded aluminum. Get it anodized for like $20 and you're all set with a small K&N.

run 3 seperate lines from valve covers to catch can w/ large breather/filter...
run tb port to wg, and manifold port to boost gauge and bov...
done...
