Default Thickest headgasket recommended for FI setup???

Looking for what headgasket thickness should not be exceeded when building a FI engine for either blower or turbo, with max boost in the 18-20psi range, but usually run in the 14-16psi range.

Also, does anyone know what the largest BORE headgasket can be used on the 4.000" bore LS2 block? I know 4.160" gasket will work but wondering about a 4.190"?

Thanks

Chad

I would stick with the thinnest head gasket you can find.. Since your head gasket is going to be the weakest link in the combustion chamber, the less of it there is to damage, the better..

Well, that is kinda what I thought but I talked with Eric @ Diamond pistons and he said I should run at least a .051 gasket. I didn't think to ask him what the thickest he thought I could run or why at least a .051.

If you think about it really on a MLS gasket, you would think the thicker you go it would just make the center steel plate thicker and the outer layers would remain the same so theoretically it would be just as strong as a thinner gasket. But I don't want to find out the hard way! Basically, I want to run a .065 custom Cometic gasket and just want to make sure it will hold the boost I want to run.

For best quench or "squish" I would stick with something more like .040". IMHO .065" is too big and you run the risk of a lower detonation point due to poor quench.

As far as your head gasket being the weakest link, I believe that detonation or extreme levels of boost are the only things that will damage a good quality, properly installed modern head gasket.

I agree that around an .040 gasket will provide the best quench and that is a critical part of a high comp NA engine, but I have read alot that quench is not really a factor on a low comp, FI setup w/dish pistons. I have always been told not to worry with quench when biulding a low comp FI engine. Not saying I couldn't be wrong of course...

4 valve imports have a huge advantage with a much better designed chamber that is less condusive to detonation from its layout andcentered spark plug location.. spacingt hem is not as detrimental as it is with ours. also smaller bores are naturally less prone to detonate from the smaller volume (read space) air and fuel has to be in, turbulating it is MUCH easier and happens alot faster.
