IF, the block and piece are prepped properly and completely clean and the welder knows how to use his machine it will hold just fine, however if you a skeptic, perhaps some support braces can be added to give some extra holding power to those weak little bosses or have some block aluminum welded in place and redrill new holes for the starter bolts with steel thread inserts, I would not go through the trouble of swapping blocks unless it was part of a previously laid game plan and this is a good excuse to go forward.

welding is STRONG usually the weld is stronger then the surrounding metal and if it breaks it will break at a new joint or location due to the weld being superior in strength. Just find a welder who has experience welding CAST materials as the prep work will be KEY, a guy who rolls his machine out and attempts to just go at it is going to fail at fixing this properly.

Take it to a welder that has a really really good reputation... I'd shop around and only go with someone that's top notch... don't just pick someone out of the phone book. I'm pretty sure they'll also want to leave a little extra material in there so you have something to drill and tap.

Weld it. Hell...if the tabs arent strong enough welded(they should be) why not just weld the damn starter to the block? Otherwise the block is trash anyway right ?

Not that I'm a "just make it work" mechanic....but I cant see tossing a whole block because of a couple of little tabs. Its like throwing away a car because it has a flat.

which car??

we weld our fuel blocks all the time. pan rails, torched decks, only thing that we dont do is weld up a cracked main. once it cracks there, the block is done. you will be fine welding that up.

Thanks for the advice. My friend/mechanic is going to give it a whirl welding it up. He is a VERY skilled welder and if it can be welded and fixed.....he can do it.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Will do. A 370 with all the goodies would have been nice....but expensive. Plus I have a TON of parts just waiting to be installed:

rossler TH400/stall
fully loaded 9"
all kinds off suspension goodies
LL/abs delete
etc

So it will be nice if it can be fixed, and I can have my ride back with all the new goodies by early next week!

Good choice! As most have said, weld it and forget it! My block did the same thing when I hydro locked it. The welds worked great!

Good luck with the new build!

So yea......tried to push start my car about 3 or 4 times, wasn't happening. Also tried to push it while it was in 6th gear and it wouldn't budge. I don't get it. I don't see how it could be hydro locked. The last time I drove it, it was POURING, but I never went through the smallest puddle. It was driving fine and I parked at my girl's house. Later that night when I went to start it......it just made a big noise on the first crank, and then I could hear the starter spinning freely.

Had it towed to my buddies house who does all my mechanic work that's over my head. We'll see.
